    Any clinical exposure?

Just curious now that Maine is closing down do SMU students get any clinical exposure during Basic sciences (i.e hospital visiting? Preceptorship?) whether in Florida or in cayman?

Well.. Maine was just a 5th semester, mostly board review with ICM and shadowing.
Miami is the same way, first 7 weeks Kaplan, rest of the time ICM and shadowing.
In Cayman, you can start shadowing in 4th (I have heard of some in 3rd doing it) and will also continue with it if you stay here for 5th.

On cayman, clinical activity is limited. In Miami, today was our first real day of clinical "activity." So far the teachers are very good and are helping us learn (today was Venipuncture, catheterization, and retinal exam introduction). At school we practice on dummies (no, not the students) and students. Apparently we also have hired actors to evaluate. We also have preceptor shadowing and tomorrow is the first day. Post again in a couple of weeks and I can actually give you a better synopsis.

Maine had 4th semester and 5th semester. Banker was up there for that.

We shadowed in 4th, but it wasn't a lot.

From what I gathered.. we get 2 hrs a week in Miami, now. In Cayman, you get 4 hrs a week. However, in Cayman, the hours will be cut to 2, like Miami, especially since you can decide to stay in Cayman now if you want.

From what Dr. N said (from Dr. K, who used to be at Ross and Saba), this is still more time than other schools get in 5th.

No, we get 4 hours a week of shadowing here in Miami. There are about 8-10 docs to accomidate the 50 somthing people here in ICM. We are assigned a preceptor (a doctor) and we go once a week for 4 hours to his/her office with a partner. Hope this clears up any confusion.
