compared to all those other candidates, what superficial qualities did you have that others didnt?
Good board scores do help out a lot.
Having a solid CV and medical school profile is a positive.
Great letters of recommendation.
The interview with the PD is usually key.
You have to show a lot of interest in the program and vice versa (they show interest in you). You can do this by doing an elective or two with the hospital and buddying it up with the residents and attendings, or by calling/emailing/visiting the program coordinator and getting on her goodside. Always be professional.

Dont ever ask about a prematch... phrase it another way such as "I can definitely see myself being very comfortable here" or some other type of thing.

Basically the program has to really like you in order to offer you a prematch. Thats probably one of the only benefits we get as being an IMG, the ability to sign a contract outside of the Match.

sounds complex
for one, i don't have a solid cv... because i didn't do anything during med school!!

i was hoping it would be as easy as sleeping with the PD..... if she at least looks like the PD in House.

The school can help you with your CV.

If you need to buff it up you can perhaps sign up for the masters program, involve yourself in research and/or tutor students.

IT IS COMPLEX!!!! .... most of your accomplishments will come from pre-med school stuff and a little stuff you did during med school (but not much unless you use your 2 week breaks efficiently jk).

If you're really on top of things, I see no reason why you shouldn't be approved for an NIH grant to do stem cell research during those 2 week breaks...
