Exclamation Roll Call for All experts on NYS licensure

    Hi All!
A quick question for those of you currently in clinicals in NY, and whishing to practice there. Those of you who started SMU prior to 2004 NY approval probably have done basic science portion program technically in an "unapproved" at that time school. Was this NY approval retroactive? I've tried to contact NYSED OP directly, but could not get any specific info out of them. Since most graduates are still in NY residencies they probably have 3 year limited permits, which are given to any residents. So far nobody from SMU had been licensed in Ny permanently yet (according to the medical board) I just want to understand how does this NY thing work? From what i understand it mostly deals doing no more than 12 weeks of clinical rotations prior to the approval. But my real question is if the status of the school had changed midway or closer to your graduation...are you going to be grandfathered in as a graduate of now approved by NY school? Sorry if I went too long. The State licensing forum appears to be very generic for issues like this one. I know many ppl who started SMU in 2002-03 will probably be in the best position to answer it.

    Thanks very much

    Exclamation bump

So nobody can answer? Where are the talking heads when you need them? O'K then, let me rephrase it. Are there any SMU grads permanently licensed in NYS? If you are out there, could you please post your experience with NY licensing body NYSED OP? Someone who' s done with their residency (assuming only 3 yrs) would be the person who started SMU some 7 yrs ago (assuming it took 4 yrs to complete MD). That was obviously prior to 2004 SMU approval by NYS. Was this approval retroactive? Were/ Are there problems re: this issue? Thanks to anyone who can shed some light. This should not be an issue for anyone who started SMU in 2004 or later, but what about those who started SMU before that time?

    Thanks

i don't think SMU had that many students enrolled during those years, so you probably will not find any students if any, that went to NY.

In NY, their licensure, as i understand it, is only to do with clinicals. As far as licensure goes, you are allowed to get perminent licensure regardless. Hope that helps
