How did the application process go. Because I applied online for the program last week and haven't heard anything. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow, but I was just wondering how easy it is to set everything up and get going.

Give it a week or so, they will email you. It was pretty smooth. Anyone that is planning on doing it, let me know. A few of us are doing a book swap, so we can all save money on buying books for these classes.

What do you guys mean when you say you are doing it for F/A reasons, or are saving $600 a month? How are you saving if you are spending for the course tuition? I am deciding whether to do it right now and want to get all the facts straight. Can you get a Stafford loan without doing the MBA? Is the MBA accredited by whoever accredits MBA's? Thanks for any info.

if you do the MBA program than you don't have to start paying back your undergrad loans, so during SMU you are saving how every much your payment would be. No you can't get a Stafford loan. If you could get one through SMU, then you wouldn't have to do the MBA program to put off paying your loans. Yes the MBA is accredited. In the long term you're not saving any money by doing the MBA. We just mean that during SMU we're saving money because we don't have to pay these Stafford undergrad loans with our Health Express loans.

You can NOT get the Stafford through SMU. You CAN through Davenport, since it is a fully accrediated US school.

The entire MBA is around $18,000. I would have to pay $600 on my current loans, which now I don't, since I am doing the MBA. I will get a few thousand dollars over my tution to help with living expenses. That $600 a month would really eat into my money if I had to pay it.. So.. you are correct, overall, I will pay more in loans and interest. However.. right NOW, it is saving me $600 a month, plus I get extra money, PLUS I get a MBA. MBA aren't really great for healthcare (even though this MBA has a healthcare concentration), however.. the extra education might be the difference of me getting a residency over someone else. It shows you are motivated, educated and that you aren't willing to above and beyond the minimum required.

Though having an MBA will look "better" on your resume and be beneficial in your medical practice, I disagree that it will help in obtaining a residency. Board scores are first and foremost!!!

By the way, I'm also doing the MBA through Davenport...

I agree.. however.. if it is between me and Joe Blow.. we have similar grades, similar board scores, etc... and I/you have a MBA, you might get interviewed or get the residency, since you have one notch up on them.

I think any extra education will put you up on the list, withstanding medical grades, board scores are close to equal.

Well said.... Simply put, just use the MBA for extra "dressing", but don't rely on it for residency.

Good luck!

Thanks for the responses. In my case, since I have no undergrad loans, I am not affected from that standpoint BUT, if I have my facts straight I can take out the full amount (~9000) from Stafford to pay for the MBA (~3000), and use the difference (around 6000) to put towards SMU. Since the government subsidizes this interest, it beats taking more out from health express. That's 6000 per semester I won't be losing about 7% interest on. Thats my logic, at least.
