MBBS vs MD... what should I do?

So I decided I want to be an MD. Okay... great. Now what? I've already completed 1 year of undergrad work towards my ** Chemistry which leaves me 3 more years at undergrad then 4 years of Med School (7 total)... OR... I can start my MBBS at UWI right away - 5 years and I'm done. So, my question is this: what are the virtues of doing the MD vs the MBBS? Is there a stigma attached to grads with an MBBS? Does anyone know if IMGs who are US citizens are treated differently than MD grads?

I've got to tell you, I find the prospect of graduating 2 years earlier than planned to be quite attractive. Also, I am an adult learner - over 30 years old, so that 2 years means a whole lot to me in terms of earned income.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a lot.

    hi

    Hi,
There is another post just like this one, but what the hell
If you are planning on practicing in the US, and MD would be preferable, but for places such as the UK and Europe, MBBS is prefered for some odd reason :S
if the US registration bord (medical) prefere an MD to an MBBS/MbChB, they want an MD, but basicaly MD is equal to and MBBS, so you are just as well to go to the carribean and get an MBBS, As to your situation, it would save vast amounts of time!.

BTW, How much is the MBBS course at UWI?

    Thanx

Hey guys, thanks so much for your input. So far I think I really am leaning towards doing the MBBS.

LUGANSK_STATE_MEDICAL_UNI - the UWI tuition is $15,000 per year plus fees and food/housing.

    Hello,
The people here are experianced , So I would like 2 talk 2 u............

I am 4m India . I am about 2 join St.Martinus,Curacao 4 MD course . I know that ROSS,SABA etc are the best ,but they are very expensive. I also know that this is a brand new college . But things are going quite well there( I talked to some students),and I have not heard anything bad about it( I have gone through the forum) .

I have heard that there is a 500 bedded hospital there. Are there patients
there to practice on. How are the clinicals ? Do they let us experiment
    on them.

Also what is the strength of students in the college, particularly of each
    semester?

How have your clinicals been if you have had any??
So any suggestions?????????Please reply.I dont have much time and have to make a decision???? ( please send a private message, try not to post a reply here or mail me at gupta_sushant1@rediffmail.com)

    Re MMBS

With respect to doing your MBBS at UWI, sonny you have a wonderful opportunity.

You should take it with open arms.

Note that UWI is accredited in all 50 states.

Go finish your MBBS there and go read "Pamela" as the UWI students say and you can go take steps 1 &2 together as my cousin did a few years ago.

The training is super at UWI.

Well the practice of Medicine is called PRACTISING LOL..

However proper trained physicians dont practice as such LOL

They make decisions based on knowledge or /and experience. Properly trained physicians are taught NEVER BE THE FIRST TO EMBRACE THE NEW OR THE LAST TO ABANDON THE OLD. Consequently, most sane doctors stick to current therapy.

The lad who posted seems not to have understood the jargon, and is using it incorrectly.

In clinical training, medical students practice the two major skills employed in the practice of Medicine; i.e HISTORY TAKING & PHYSICAL EXAMINANATION.

Students are taught and they practice the art of extracting relevant information from the patient, and must learn to detect any red herrings that cross the trail during thier questioning of the patient. Good doctors will make the diagnosis 98% of the time on taking histories alone. Very often when the incorrect diagnosis is made, it is because a POOR history was taken.

However, when a proper history is obtained, when the DR rises from his chair to examine the patient, he has a very good idea of which areas of the body to concentrate in his examination, and he knows exactly what he should be looking for, and which signs he will be attempting to elicit.

To take a proper history, students must learn thier Basic Sciences well initially, and then learn the information gathered in the texts read in thier clinical years.

During thier clinical years, medical students also learn how to examine the body and how to look for and elicit specific signs whiich are pathognomonic for particular diseases.

Students do not usually do (practice) invasive proceedures on patients, except under supervision; and this practice is usually limited to very simple proceedures such as setting up IV lines, passing catheters per urethram etc

It is therefore very unlikely that St Martinus students doing rotations in the hospital in Curacao will be practising like Frankensteins or any other fiends.

St Martinus are very fortunate to have teaching them some very rigid clinicians. And the students trust our judgement and experience as we try to pass on skills and knowledge to them guided by the principles of 2 Timothy 2:2 and Galatians 6:6.

THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIMENTING WITH PATIENTS AT ST MARTINUS.

Students here have been taught how students at other schools have failed courses for playing the fool and doing such dastardly acts as killing a dog in Pharm experiments by giving an overdose------ so they know that they will not get away if they try to be AZOLES (pun intended).

(For your info Azzie azoles are drugs can cause trouble because they interact with many other drugs)

Even absenteeism is a NO NO here. ........ so AZZIE REST ASSURED....... THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIMENTING WITH PATIENTS AT ST MARTINUS.

    ???

    Question?

Why was this thread moved to St. Martinus Medical School forum? I was asking a question about going to the UWI (University of the West Indies) schools of medicine.... they are located in Jamaica, Barbados or Trinidad.

I understand that someone tried to piggyback on this thread with a question about St. Martinus (although I don't get why), but other than that and the fact that there is no UWI forum, is there any particular reason that this thread is now located in the St. Martinus forum? It took me quite a while to locate it.
