i agree w/DrB
Congrats on getting accepted...
BUT be patient and consider a different school. Be especially leary of med schools that don't have cadavers. St. James is one such school. I'm currently trying to choose a Carib school myself. I've done extensive research and while no school is perfect, Ross looks better and better everyday. Of course you have to choose the school that's best for you. In your search consider 1.track record (SO important for smooth sailing in your future) 2. the type of island life you can tolerate (some are more developed than others) 3.class size 4.USMLE pass rates (first attempts) 5.tuition (and what exactly is included in tuition) 6. # of states in which residencies actually exist (some schools say they're affiliated with hospitals X,Y,Z, L, M, N, O, P and those hospitals say nope, not true) 7. opinions of actual students (THIS site is great for that--use it) 8. real cadavers (it means so much in so many different ways) good luck in your search |

St. James really looks good.
Dear Moina,
One of my pals is studying in St. james at the moment. He loves it there. I plan to go there the Jan semester. From what I have heard St. James has come a long way since it began. They are developing fast. They are moving into a bigger building later this year and are developing a HUGE library. My friend says that the teachers are really helpful and take a lot of personal interest in the students....which I havent heard in the bigger schools. But I can tell you for a fact that St. James with only arnd 70 students has about 11 full time teachers as opposed to St. Georges 8. And god only knows how many students they have. And I heard they have great rotations!!!! No doubt SJSOM is new...but it sure seems promising. |

From what I hear.
I have no idea of their basic science campus besides hearing they have no cadavers. However, I know the main founder of the school is one of the most experienced caribbean medical school educators with experience from Ross and (I think) Saba before he founded St. James.
The school has a middle-of-the road fee, and the founder is very experienced with Caribbean issues, to my knowledge. All I can reccommend is for you to talk to students from all schools you apply to before you committ. Good luck. Son of Jafeth |

One thing to remember...
Quote:
Why is St. James the "worst" option Dr B (ull)?? The worst compared to what? St. James has: *among the most reasonable fees of all schools *among the best clinicals (all green book) *among the most experienced founding administration Again, what makes it "the worst"?? Besides as a bashing argument? I rest my case. Son of Jafeth |

st. James
while it may be a new college, one has to admire their website
http://www.sjsm.org/ They cover most questions that one should have and don't gloss over stuff. |
