No didn't say that, school is 4 years old right? So almost 4 years for medical school and then grads, if a lot of people transferred that were upper classmen last year the pool graduating would be less. Why would that be so hard to understand?

I dont think you understand. There are a lot of people in rotations all around the US. Some of them dont finish there exams therefore they end up starting residency a little later or there might be a year where there are 20 graduates in one year or 30 or 60... it depends on how fast they want to start working. They are graduating. Im busy interviewing so I can't find out exact figures for you. I just know the people that are graduating with me. I dont know everyone in my class. I guess I'll find out who else when they update the list. And where are you getting those statistics 95 % wow. Thats strange because my brother went to the island and that's not what he said. Gets your facts straight. What school do are you from? Im just curious.

people have said that each class usually has 20-60 people even from the begining when people transfered into clinicals....so if there are currently only 15 residents in 5 years where did everyone else go?

-20 students per semester (min) X3 semesters= 60 students
-60 studenst per year X 5 years=300 potential graduates
-300-15=285
-attrition rate (285/300)X100=95%

numbers are made up of course just to illustrate a point.

assume that they took no transfers and that the first class graduated this year, 3 semesters would have 60 students yet there are only 15 residents. then throw in all the transfers...

its probably that not all the residents who matched reported to the school i'm just saying that it is a really low number of residents for being around almost 5 years and having taken transfers for 4 of those years...SC has hundreds of residents....

Other people have tried to create their own numbers based on X students/semester x X years...which might be reasonable. But SJSM didn't begin having consistent nuumbers until the beginning of 2004 (or perhaps late 2003). In the spring of 2005, prior to the graduation of the May 2005 class there were 87 students in clinicals and residencies, per Dr. G.

I've said it plenty of times, many of the students that attended SJSM were there to please their parents and not serious medical students, so it is not surprising that the numbers are low. There are still some students at SJSM that fall into that category, but the vast majority of them are serious students now. But I doubt that there will be an end to the "Mom and Dad want a doctor in the family" student.

hey

Okay now Im glad you say now the students are serious because I've even noticed a change in the students in the past 2 years. They have raised their standards on admission and making students pass their step 1 before clinicals has caused a lot of non serious students to not enroll any more or change to other programs. But every program has good and bad students. The sad thing is one bad student can make the impression for the rest of the students. If you work hard wherever you are you will make it. I just found out today that there are about 15 + other people graduating this year and going through the match this year. I just prematched at one of the top hospitals in Chicago today!! Another one of my classmates prematched for Anesthesio last week. I do beleive Dr. G about the numbers. I think there are a lot more they just didnt keep track in the beginning. Its going to get larger as I said previously. Another note is I've met a lot of students all across the world go into medical school because of there parents. I don't think it's just limited to Saint James. ha ha. I feel bad for anyone that went into this field because of family because it's a huge commitment for the rest of your life. Good luck to all of you. If any SJSM students (or other med students)have any questions about residency or rotations and tips on interviewing feel free to email me.
