Starting In SJSM Anguilla Sept. 2011

I wanted to start this forum for all the students going to the Anguilla Campus at the start of the 2011 fall semester(I know it's early). I wanted to get everyone's insight on the new campus both good and bad, and possibly create some friendships before heading down there.

I also have been doing a lot of research of my own on the new school so feel free to ask me any questions, I will try my best to answer you based on what I have learned so far. Perhaps maybe we can learn from eachother instead being so misguided by all the misinformation going on about the school.

    -Good luck everyone.

    Howzit Skimo42,

I'll be joining you on Anguilla next year. It should be a wonderful experience, albeit a tremendous amount of work!

I have been anxiously searching for any information regarding financing expenses and possibly tuition (non-Delta loan) for the school, if you have information regarding this, it would be greatly appreciated. It seems as though accreditation is not an issue with the Anguilla campus or am I wrong about this? I am from Florida and would like to return here to practice!

If I find out anything that may be good to know or of use, I'll be sure to post it here. Anyways, looking forward to hearing from you!

    All the best,
    Gavi

It definitely will be a lot of work based on what I am reading and hearing but I definitely am looking forward to it. I am also searching for other finance options. I read some people talking about the davenport program which allows you to complete either a mph/mba etc online while your in the caribbean. People use the financial aid they receive through that to help pay for their expenses.

As far as the accreditation goes, I sent this very same e-mail to somebody asking a question about it.

I think this year is going to be an important one when it comes to deciding which campus to go to. As of right now and I confirmed this with IMED, students who are attending the Anguilla campus are not eligible to sit in for the USMLE. The only way the Anguilla students will be eligible is if the administration at St. James gets the Anguilla campus listed on the IMED website, the bonaire campus is already listed there and has been for about 10 years. Unfortunately however it does not work like an umbrella where the accreditation of the Bonaire campus applies to the Anguilla campus. Only after the Anguilla campus gets itself listed in IMED then can it be certified by the ECFMG and the students there will be able to take their USMLE.

Here is the good news, I spoke to a student over there and a representative from the Chicago office, and both of them stated that the campus should receive accreditation by January. It seems logical at least to me, that the school would not mess this up because.....

    1. It already has a successful campus with many accreditations WHO, ECFMG, etc you can check the website for the other accreditations, in Bonaire and this campus has been operating for over 10 years now.

    2. The Anguilla campus began January 2010, which means that the first cycle of students will be finished with MD4 getting ready to take their USMLE by the end of this May I believe, without the accreditation they will be screwed out of taking the exam. Thats a lot of students who paid a heck of a lot of money that will not be able to practice in the States. This places pressure on the school to get the accreditation done asap.

So, overall, it really is a waiting game for me. If they don't receive the accreditation then most likely I will be going to Bonaire. I really hope they do however because I feel that Anguilla is a newer better facility than Bonaire and if your from the states, an easier place to get accustomed to.

As far as being able to practice in Florida from my understanding as long as you complete your residency anywhere in the United States and achieve good scores on your USMLE then being able to practice in any state shouldn't be a problem.

Check at the Federation of State Medical Boards online for state specific licensure requirements. I can't post links for some reason.

To double check I would call the specific dept. in the state your interested just to make sure you can practice there.

I hope this helps man let me know if you hear anything else or need anything clarified and I look forward to meeting you in Anguilla 2011!

    -Good luck.

If you speak with your advisor...they will give you factual info. Value MD is not a place you should rely on info such as what was given above. Some might be true and some false. Talk to the school.

What exactly do you think is false with the above post? I have spoken with the office in Chicago and I have specifically emailed IMED for information. I have also spoken with a lot of students who attend SJSM. The only thing that has changed recently is the IMED listing of the Anguilla campus which you can go check for yourself. Perhaps you should do your own research or read posts more thoroughly.

Never mind...I now see WHEN you wrote that statement. Sorry about that. I wanted to clear it up that St. James Anguilla is IMED listed and students can take their USMLE. You are correct. At the time of your posting...they were having that issue because Anguilla was so new but now everything is fine.

    Hey all,

This thread was created for SJSM Anguilla Fall 2011 students to introduce themselves and mingle...why don't we stick to the purpose of the thread for now?

I got admitted for this term too! I'm from Montreal, and excited about studying in some warmer weather. I'm hoping to be able to return to Canada after my MD, but it looks like this may be a challenge :s
