How is Anatomy Lab?

To MS1, MS2, MS3, MS4 students,

How are the cadaver labs for SJSM? How many students are assigned to a cadaver?

I was actually looking at buying a human skeletal model and musculature model. Any of you guys did this? Any recommendations?

Thanks guys,

The cadaver lab is around the corner from the School. We have 4 bodies and its about 7 - 10 people per body, and the conditions are alright, but not compared to US med schools.

As far as bringing any models, it might be a good idea, but mostly if you have the netters flash cards, you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply, Fresh.

I'll keep a look out for Netters flash cards as well.

The anatomy lab has models you can look at during class if you have extra time when not working on the bodies. Make sure you bring gloves!!!! The school doesn't supply them so you need your own. A lab coat is needed too so pick one of those up. The formaldehyde smell can get pretty strong so you can bring some surgical masks too to help combat that a little. They have some instruments to use but they prefer you have your own dissection kit to use. Bring a clipboard for test days in the lab. There isn't anything to write on so you end up using the wall most of the time. A couple people in my class started using peppermint oil or menthol rub under their nose because the formaldehyde smell was pretty bad our semester, would get to the point that your throat was sore and your eyes would sting from it. Might have gotten better for this years MD1's but didn't ask. We had 3 cadavers for around 48 people so our class was a little tight in the lab and had 3 groups of 16 give or take.

Thanks cglass, thanks for the heads up.

I'll make sure to stock up on surgical gloves, as well as masks.
See you on the island and good luck on your 3rd term! Good luck on finals!

Warm Regards,

ANAtomy LAb

I can tell you for certain that ANAtomy Lab is in the afternoon at 1pm.
I visited the island a few weeks ago and was able to sit in on the anatomy class when i was there.

What i experienced was that there were only two cadavers out and if i remember correctly..there were maybe 6 students to a body. They all seemed to work well together and help each other out as they were reviewing.

The LAB was one of the KEY things i was concerned about. Being there and sitting in on the classes was very very helpful.

BTW...
CGLASS is a GREAT resource.
As busy as the students are there, all of you should thank CGLASS for the info she is sharing. Especially since most of the questions on here are soooo repetitive. (if only people would just read)

One thing the forgot to mention as far as things to bring...a voltage converter is the thing EVERYONE was telling me to make sure i brought.

See you all in MAy.

A converter? I was under the impression that the island used 110/220v, the same as the U.S. Difference being 50 Hz instead of 60 Hz.

Please clarify.

Thank you so much for the confirmation and for the post, Mike. I really appreciate all the straight forward advice.

My Thanks,

PS. Yes, indeed, cglass is a wealth of information. Gotta admit that the SJSM students are very helpful.
