Transfer from Saint James before Clinicals?

    Advertisements

Hi, I know transferring from a Caribbean med school is not that easy and probably rare, but would it be possible to transfer to another school (US or Caribbean) for rotations? (Granted you have a competitive step 1 score)

I'm a SJSM grad, and I will give you some advice. Did you register with ECFMG for USMLE Step 1? If you did, then DO NOT TRANSFER. If you didn't register with ECFMG then transferring is fine. Because transferring will look bad on your record when you apply for residency.

What way does it look bad for Residency application?

Assuming that it will show up that you took the exam while being sponsored by a different school than the school that granted you your degree.

US students rarely transfer from one medical school to another. Now think about how bad it looks from a Caribbean school. Transferring from one international school to another is a red flag.

On the other hand, transferring to a US medical school (while incredibly rare) is the ultimate step up and opens a panorama of specialties that most FMGs almost never match into. But again, that is an exceptionally tough row to hoe.
