I hate "I have greater than 3.5 gpa>!

I don't know about others, but I thought it is my ultimate duty to inform all of you that I hate "I have a greater than 3.5 gpa, would I get in?"

Well if you were so successful in attaining greater than 3.5 gpa I bet you folks know it too that you have a pretty good shot at ANY carribbean medical school, and SEVERAL US medical schools depending on MCAT.

So do you post such info to make others feel bad, or just get
re-assurance?

Do Not get offended.

High GPA doesn't necessarily mean the kid is smart...He/she might have gone to some joke school or a community college that has an easy academic curriculum. Especially if you're comparing a Teir 1 college Vs a Teir 3 college. Its like night and day.

IMHO, a 3.2 from a "good" school would be better than a 3.5+ from some joke school no one has even heard about. Not saying that all unheard of schools are easy...Just saying if they were that smart, they would have gotten in a better college to begin with (minus financial reasons).

High GPA from Top 20 Teir 1 US colleges = Golden.

Hey Jlai

I totally disagree with that statement. If you look at the mcat's scores, you will see a lot of people who went "top 20" schools who really screwed up mcats, and people who went to "joke school" kicked ***. How do you explain that? And no i dont think it's b/c at top 20 they dont teach what's on the mcat. If person is smart he will be smart coming out of community college or coming out of Harvard period....Also i think mcats are not flawed b/c if it is, then it is flawed for everyone who is taking the exam..therefore everyone who is taking the exam has this disadvantage.

lets not start to develop an ego here...after all we are all going to the carribeans. That said it really does not matter where you went to get your undergrad education (community college or some major university). In the end a good gpa is a good gpa regardless of where you went. It all depends upon the individual and how much effort they put into their work.

Oh...Don't get me wrong. I totally agree with you on the whole MCAT thing because it is STANDARDIZED. Someone who is smart will be smart anywhere they go...I'm not arguing that. What I am saying is a 3.9 in a community college doesn't automatically mean they are some super genious. They can have a 3.9 at a community college but if they went to say...Yale, they might have a 3.0. (Thus why alot of "smart" kids from awesome colleges end up going to the Carribean...Cause US med school admissions is highly, highly GPA based). Don't even try to say you're gonna get the same curriculum difficulty at both colleges.

Using your argument, there are alot of people from Teir 3 schools with killer GPAs but less than desireable MCAT scores. Alot lower than what you would predict from the GPA their college gave them. How do you explain that?

Hey Desidoc,

Thanks for your polite and friendly comments about me. Good job on accomplishing your ''ultimate duty''.

In response to your question....I was sincerely asking about my chances, because I truly did not know. This whole pre-med thing is new to me. My undergrad degree is in Information Systems, and I've been working in the IT industry for a while. So I was not familiar with the stats/experience that are necessary for Medical School. But hey, thanks for letting me know that I have great qualifications. Good luck to you as well.

I want to thank everyone else who remained civilized, mature, and responded to my inquiry with real feedback. I wish you all the very best of success.

peace

the best way to deal with hostile posts is to not respond. Let them stand alone in all their glory and they make the poster look bad; respond in kind and they get what they want and the thread degenerates.

I urge folks to keep this board the good example it has traditionally been: professional and friendly. If not, you can all go to your room.

thank you

I totally agree with you Steph. Thank you for your advice.

The key is to remain Professional and Friendly, and that's exactly how my response was.

Best wishes, Happy holidays to everyone.

back to original post

I guess the original post did come off as hostile, but a valid point. I often see people post on this forum with 3.5+ gpa and ask if they have a chance. It just makes you wonder if someone that ill-informed about the whole process is going to make it.

For the record, if you read this and have about a 3.5 gpa.. buy an MCAT review book.. get above a 26 on the test and apply to osteopathic and allopathic US schools, stop wasting your time looking into the carribean route because you have an excellent chance of admission stateside.
