re: 3.5 gpa etc.

Hey all,

I guess I can see both sides of this.....

I just wanted to add:

it really bothers me when I see a thread like "I have blah, blah gpa what are my chances". not so much because I think the person is really trying to be insensitive; it bothers me because this person could probably find the answer by simply searching through older posts.

that being said, it really doesn't roast my hide that much, and I realise that you won't necessarily find the answers to all your questions if you just search for them in past posts.

Cheers all,

Silenthunder

About GPA's, MCATs, and Intelligence

I would like to say that I do not mind people asking about their chances of getting into medical school. I understand where they are coming from. I just recently got into St. George's (January 2004) and I was not sure whether I would get in or not. I have a 3.9 GPA (from large, tier 2, public university [Human Nutrition]), and an IQ in the 140s but I made a 21 on the MCAT! I feel that I am an intelligent person, but my MCAT score would reflect that I was not well prepared in the sciences, and that I did not have a thought process that was conducive with analytical processing. I believe that a person is more than an IQ or an MCAT or a GPA. I love that schools like St. Georges looks at more than just a person's standardized scores; this creates a diverse student population that is full of unique and varied life experiences and abilities. And, I will judge my classmates, and future colleagues, on how hard they work and how compassionate they are toward the human condition instead of what they make on the MCAT, their GPA or any other standardized evaluation of their person.
And, just for reference, I am posting this not as an inflammatory remark but as my opinion, which is fallable.

gpa

It's all good. I had a GPA of 3.95 and I was at the best undergrad up in Boston. My MCATs were the best. I was also in all the sports teams and was president of my class. I published 2 research papers before I went to med school and my IQ was even higher than the previous guy's IQ, about 200. All these numbers mean nothing though and I am sure there have to be other people out there as smart as I am.
And, just for reference, I am posting this not as an inflammatory remark but as my opinion.

I'm bored and don't feel like studying for my parasitology final...............

(Everybody will hate me for this, but I couldn't resist.)

Wait a minute!!! What¡¯s that I smell? It smells like, like, like¡¦. Yep, that¡¯s it. It¡¯s verbal diarrhea.

C¡¯mon medic. Although IQ scores of 200 are possible, I find it unlikely that someone that intelligent would be hanging around a foreign school message board.

According to some sources, you are probably the 3rd smartest person that ever lived. The 2nd smartest person alive nowadays.

People smarter than you:

William James Sidis (1898-1944). Some say his IQ was between 250-300. Apparently anything over 200 is unmeasurable. BTW, this guy went to Harvard at the tender age of 11.

Marylin Vos Savant (1946-). Writer. Reported to have an adult IQ of 218.

Some lesser mortals than you:

Blaise Pascal. You know, the mathematician. This imbecile had an IQ of only 171.

Albert Einstein. You know, the guy with the crazy hair. Stupid, only 168.

Galileo Galilei. You know, the guy who invented the thermoscope, telescope, discovered the satellites of Jupiter and some other minor stuff. Brainless, only 165.

Charles Darwin. You know, the naturalist. Wrote a poorly known book called ¡°The origin of the species¡±. This dim-witted fool only had 153.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You know, the composer. The guy that started taking harpsichord lessons before the age of 4, started to compose music at 5 and was a keyboard virtuoso at 6. Could compose music as fast as he could think. Composed over 600 works (died at 35). Asinine, only 153.

Some stuff for comparison:

Intelligence Interval Cognitive Designation Common Possessors*

85 - 114 Average Pupils at junior high school
115 - 124 Above average Pupils at senior high school
125 - 134 Gifted University graduates
135 - 144 Highly gifted Intellectuals
145 - 154 Genius Professors
155 - 164 Genius Nobel Prize Winners
165 - 179 High genius
180 - 200 Highest genius
>200 "Unmeasurable" genius MEDIC

I don¡¯t doubt that you are smart. After all, you are a pediatric pulmologist. However, don¡¯t make pooh pooh up.

And, just for reference, I am posting this not as an inflammatory remark but as my opinion.

Cheers,

RK403

PS. May be just the lack of sleep talking (as is the case with all med students). So, don't hate the player. Hate the game.

Thank you Niche! These are exactly my circumstances. That's why I felt it was a very legitimate question. High GPA (even from a strong university) does not mean anything. So I am not impressed at all by my high GPA, nor does it give me any kind of assurance in admissions. This is always a concern particularly for non-traditional students like Me, who have non-science degrees, have been in the work force for a while, and are now returning to school and scrambling to finish the science requirements. I know many people with high GPA's were still rejected from US schools (and yes we are from well respected universities, not community colleges). It is well known that many qualified, deserving applicants are still rejected from US Schools, due to the extremely limited number of seats available. So I would still be very Happy to attend SGU or Ross.

Anyways, I think it is unfair that others try to censor people's questions just because they feel ''annoyed'' by these questions.

Ok Thanks for all the advice and feedback dudes, and best wishes to everyone
Now let's just forget about this subject, enjoy the holidays, and eat lots of Turkey shall we.
