question about admissions
Ok sorry everyone, I know this may seem like a stupid question.
What do you think are my chances of admission based on my stats? 3.70 Overall GPA. A's and B's in all of my science coursework, except in Organic Chemistry. It looks like I will be getting a ''C'' (my only C ever) in Organic Chemistry (the professor is horrible!) ....so then, how important is this grade in organic chemistry to admissions? Can a ''C'' in that class severly impact my chances for admission? I heard that, since Medical Schools have a heavy biochem curriculum, they may place more emphasis on that organic chem grade for admissions, than other aspects of the application. Is that true? Finally, based on practice tests, I predict I can get an MCAT score in the range of 25-29. And I have some hospital volunteer experience, good shadowing experience at a clinic, and good letters of rec. thanks for the feedback....... |

question
I would not worry about getting a C in one course as far as admissions goes. All else being equal, that will not be what keeps you from gaining admission given your other stats. You should consider the hierarchy of importance of the acceptance criteria. First is MCAT, GPA, experience, etc. and way down the list is performance in an individual class.
A 3.7 is on par with US schools. A 28-29 MCAT is the national average accepted MCAT for 2002, so a little studying for a few more points on the exam will put you in a good position academically. Other than that, keep up the volunteer work, and research is nice to have as well. Good luck to you. If it doesnt work I dont see you having any trouble getting accepted at SGU. |

chances
With your gpa you should only aim to go to a u.s. med school. If you get
>25 on the mcat you should definately get into some u.s. med school. Make sure you have some clinical experience, good lor's, and a personal statement. If you really want to go to med school in the u.s. you may need to apply to atleast 25 schools. It will be expensive but it will be worth it in the end. There is nothing wrong with caribbean med schools but you have the stats to get into a u.s. med school. |

Thank you
Thanks very much for all the advice. This whole Pre-med thing is still new to me (my undergrad degree was in information systems), so I wasn't sure what stats/experience are necessary for med school.
thanks again for your honest feedback. My best wishes to all of you... |
