Its pretty much a crap shoot at the airport. Some people get their baggage checked, others don't. I didn't get my bags checked when I went through customs.

Some packages that are mailed get opened by customs or they will tax you based on what the sender declared the contents to be.

yes so thank you for that post: Customs is indeed hit or miss; but given than many people have questions regarding customs tax this is a very nice list to have and new arrivals ought to be grateful that someone took the time to post it.

I would add my agreement that the reality is that the customs behaviors vary, but you will make your life easier by being obliging and compliant while in line.

listen, the point is these items, when new, are taxable. And so you should know because any of them may be taxed. In liklihood many wont be. But its now in writting for users to be aware of so there is no debate at the counter.
Also things in Gda movely slllloowly to begin with so you may as well resign yourself to that to begin with, even if they move you right through the line.

It generally seems that you dont get taxed too much on your baggage that you check. I came and went at least twice a term, always bringing back the maximum baggage requirement and was only dutied on my laptop the one time. My bags were always checked, but never thoroughly, and if they didnt ask what i had, I didnt offer. However, most people who shipped stuff, esp through amerijet, got dutied out the wazoo. I think they do that bc they know you are shipping valued items, and they are used to going through shipped boxes of retail items for stores and assigning duty to them.

My two cents, which have said often, is dont ship anything down, and fly Air Jamaica instead where you can bring basically everything you want.
