Question Shed some light on this!

Can someone explain the basis on which persons are selected for residency? Is based on USLME grades?

How long after graduation are persons fitted into a residency program?

there is an application process for residencies just like there is one for med schools and colleges. you apply your 4th year of medical school so that you can start your residency when you graduate. the committee looks at your usmle scores, letters of rec, your grades and how well you interviewd. Its just like applying to medical school or college.

This means that ur enrollment into a competive residency program, eg. Neurosurgery, will be based on your grades & not based on your school (as some would have me think)?

the reality that your school will come into play. if you came from havard youd likely have more c hoices than from state U. from sgu (or DO or abroad in general) you likely will have less, residency for residency. For neurosurgery, its very very difficult. Its been done, but difficult. Doint go to sgu counting on being a neuro surgeon. Your usmle, lor, clincal sci grades, research, interview etc will all come into play. the basic sci grades less so.

i never quite get the dual residency thing. most people stick with one in actual practice. i know the theory is you "learn more" but if you wind up practicing the one, you get rusty quick and shouldnt touch the other field.

I think IM will serve you well in EM. One of the problems I see with many ER docs is they have no clue what happens in a hospital. G
