like laptops, i'd would think you'd want to bring that down yourself, but the printer, i guess you could ship that.

im assuming they charge a duty on these things?

Depends on the custom officer's mood. Usually just the 5% of the laptop, but if you piss them off, here is what they could theoretically charge you for:

Yeah, don't piss of customs. It'll hurt your wallet.

Also, the library has printers so up to you if you want to bring one down. FYI, library printers are black & white lasers with no double-sided support. Use a USB thumb drive and it's easy to bring stuff to the library to print. Still, it's definitely convenient to have one a personal printer, especially if you live off-campus at some point.

I've heard that it can be difficult to get access to a printer in the library. What was your experience with printer availability?

Not bad, except when they run out of toner... Which happens occasionally, since most of the students print on the main printer on the ground floor, so you just need to know the location of the "secret" printers, which may result in a little running around to find a working printer, but you'll get your stuff printed.

There is a 20-page at a time print limit, so usually your stuff comes out relatively quick.

I agree with EMT. I haven't had a major problem with printing. If you try to print during peak times, yes, there may be a wait but I've been able to print everything I need from the library. There are hassles sometimes like when they run out of toner or paper but that's normal for any computer lab.
