it varies on the price of the laptop - do a search for laptop tax and you'll see a whole thread on it.

From what I have experienced, they opened a larger package (books) and the smaller one they didn't open (software). I am not sure what others have experienced and I am sure its variable. I wasn't taxed any extra money for duties or whatever, but others on here have reported that they were charged for various items. You may have to search for that.

I used FedEx and DHL and both times, I didn't pay anything upon arrival but I also didn't have any electronics.

KongaKut. How expensive was it to send via Fed ex and DHL? I usually send my cargo by Amerijet so I just wanted to compare prices.

A LOT! Next day air from GND to US was like $50 for FedEx for just an envelope (my refund check). My books were around $25 for 2-5 days shipping (they came in 3 days) from US to GND by DHL (but it was through Amazon so they may have cheaper shipping rates). I also had software sent from the US to GND for $32 by FedEx (I think it was 2-5 days again) but sent directly by my parents (so no discounted shipping fees). Not the cheapest way to do it, but when you need $$, books, and software quick, I was willing to pay it.

You should bring a Category 5E cable. This is the essentially the only type sold in regular electronics/computer stores, so don't worry about it. The plug is directly under the desk, so I'd recommend a 3 or 5 foot (1-2 m) length. If you bring one down, you can access the Internet the moment you get here; so, yeah, bring one.
