I have never used a tablet so can't speak first hand. My opinion is that they're great as an expensive toy. There are at least 3 guys in my class that have tablets and only one of them I ever see using his regularly for classwork.
There isn't that much drawing to do in lecture (as opposed to note-taking) as it's not like this is engineering where you're mapping out circuits, gates, etc. There was maybe some drawing in Embryo though.
I don't know about you, but I can type a hell of a lot faster than I can write. Use a program like MS OneNote or something instead.
I'd buy a tablet as a secondary PC/toy if I had a main machine i.e. desktop, at home but for the reasons you listed earlier i.e. price vs. what you can get in a normal laptop for less money, a laptop wins in my book hands down. I also don't game so I'm not biased to the more powerful machines in that regard either.
Another thing is that if you're like me and fingerprints/smudges drive you nuts, a tablet will drive you to an early grave. *grin*
In the end, of course, it's up to you. Either will work and it's not like you can't run anything on a tablet that you can run on a PC. You maybe get the best of both worlds. Type on the tablet when you want to and write on it otherwise.
