I'm still trying to figure out how I made it into 2nd term without decelling... *** As an aside, is it true that the MPH isn't valid in the US? Didn't know that. When I was interviewed, I was asked if I was interested in the dual program. Said no. Where is it valid though? Since it's an international school and not everyone will be practicing in the US (although the majority will), I guess it could be useful. As far as MPH students being slackers, it's a mixed bag just like everything else. Lots of people that went straight into Med fail/decel too. I know 4 MPH students who went on the the Med program (I'm sure I know more, but just not that they were in MPH first). One practically failed every class in first term, decelled and still failed one at the end. Another decelled but is still doing fine. A third, is currently in 4th term and was in the full program all the way through. Finally, the last is pulling nearly straight As. I'm certainly not. It all depends... |

Honestly, if you were conditionally accepted to SGU provided that you finish the MPH program, and were accepted elsewhere such as Ross or AUC, I think you'd be very foolish not to attend those other schools. SGU is expensive enough as it is, without having to worry about an officially unrecognized paper degree that won't be worth anything back in the states and is costing you 1 yr more of school. I think people are unreasonably defensive about their own schools with somewhat misplaced loyalties. Let's not kid ourselves, these are all paper mills to some degree with institutions seeking to maximize their revenues. What's important is finding a school that will allow you to live your dreams. Did you apply to med school because you wanted a MPH? Of course not, you applied because you wanted a MD. Ross or AUC will get you to your dreams just as easily as SGU will, so I would think very hard before coming down here and signing away 1yr to the MPH program. Personally, I don't think it's worth it unless someone was unwilling to attend any other school other than SGU which in itself is a bit unreasonable.

yes. there are always some that decel and fail classes depsite being them accepted straight into the MD prog. and of course im not saying that just being out of the mph prog means an automatically decel and failing med school classes, but yes i do recognize that fact but that doesnt mean its because of the mph prog and thats its a joke. its their own character and they will remain as a slacker even if you put them back in undergrad. cant compare 2 different progs and predict how well an individual will do in med school, just like you cant predict how well a physician you will be just because you aced all the classes. |

I know a few mph kids who didn't decel and are doing well in our term (4th term now), as well as other terms here at SGU. I think generalizations are not a good idea when it comes to the mph program, and I also think that while it might be a money-making scheme for the school, it offers an opportunity for those who are unable to make the jump directly to med school. Honestly in my opinion though, SGU would be wiser to start a med-prep program or a masters in biomedical sciences that introduces these students to the same classes they will see again in medical school. That would be a better use of resources in my opinion.
I wasn't an mph student, but initially I applied to the dual-program because I thought it would benefit me as a future physician. When I found out the program wasn't accredited in the US, I decided against it, and enrolled only in the MD program here at SGU, but plan on completing my MPH in the future back at an American instituition. I sort of think being in MPH is bad for any student just because it gives these students a lot more free time, which is not really indicative of how medical school really is, and they are used to having a 'slacker' attitude until first term hits and they realize that med school is pretty different than the mph program. But for those of you who are close-minded and think the MPH program is just for slackers....I doubt you will change your mind and that's a shame. |

mph
Well the mph IS just for slackers unless someone is really interested in it.
Why dont they publish the entering class statistics on the mph program? I bet it will be right around GPA 2.1... But for most of the students accepted into the mph they have no other choice as far as other med schools. |
