Clinical Experience

I would like to know of ways that a student can gain some clinical experience during terms 1-4. Are there any student run organizations/clubs that one can join to gain such experience. Please let me know. Thanks.

Surgery club is great, as you get to watch live surgerys, and Dr.Haag teaches you how to suture and stuff.

Sign up the first week, and you get a free t-shirt?

Would surgery club be advised for somebody that just wanted to gain clinical experience but has no intentions of doing a surgery residency?

Ya I was more interested in getting some clinical experience with children or something in the hospital there. Are there any student groups that would cater to this?

There are a number of selectives that can be taken during terms 1-4 (generally term 2 is the best timewise) that give you hospital experience.
Also the AMSA health fairs (3-4 per term) will give some experience with general PE thing and just getting use to talking to patients.
There is a weekly get together at grand anse with kids from the orphanage (Sat @10am)- nothing really medical, just a chance to play- not sure who organizes this, but some one will surely make an announcement in class!
Finally Women In Medicine sponsors a program called PAMs (Pregnant Adolescent Mothers) where you spend time with girls who are trying finish school while pregnant or are new mothers (PM me if you want further info on this)- kinda act as mentors to these girls.
So there are a number of opportunties available.

If you are serious about clinical experience during terms 1-4, just walk into our hospital with a set of scrubs in your backpack and they would be glad to have you shadow. If you are motivated, most physicians would love to take you aboard.

During the summers, you can also do a quasi-rotation. I am doing a surgery observer ship and am pretty much being treated like a 3rd year stud.

I am going back during the semester to follow around an orth surg or a gen surg. PM me if you are interested, we can go together.
