there are a lot of threads on this--the short answer though: I didnt buy the physio textbook or the neuro textbook, and instead i had some hand me down BRS books for both subjects. i barely used them, but since i didnt buy the books they were somewhat useful for the questions and for a last minute review before the exams or whatever, but based on my grades i am pretty glad i didnt buy the books and i bought the BRS for those two.

for immuno, i basically just memorized her book.

parasit--i bought the book and i found it helpful

genetics--doesn't matter because the questions have nothing to do with genetics. j/k, i didnt buy the book for this, i just went on the slideshow and the packet, and i think that should be enough.

hope this helps...

oh, but a disclaimer with that last post: everyone is different and you work differently in terms of how you learn, etc. etc., so what i did might not work for you. i am just telling you what i had...

books

I'd have to agree with daguru on this one - different things for different people. But I didn't buy textbooks or use any outside books for neuro and physio, and for us 100% of the questions came from somewhere in the notes. The immuno text is a must and the parasit book a nice read, but I can't imagine buying anything outside of those.

1st term the school will provide the books when you get to campus, the subsequent terms i think you will have to get it urself.

neuro books

i wouldnt buy any neuro books. i had brs and nms for neuro and didnt find them useful. the neuro class is complete for the packets they give you. just get a book to practice where and what the lesions are.

Books I wish I'd had 2nd term

1 -- BRS Physiology (Costanzo): Excellent. Your lecture notes should be comprehensive, but I found that for any class, I needed a book at hand to have a second explanation of things I found difficult. The questions are good. I used this book to prepare for Step 1, and I didn't come across anything I couldn't handle.

2 -- High-Yield Neuroanatomy: Classmates who got As/** told me this was the only book they used, and I believe them. A bit thin for me (I came to SGU with a journalism degree, so I had no background); I used it and ...

3 -- BRS Neuro: As comprehensive as you'll need for the class. The text, I found, was just way too much. Between this book and High-Yield, you should be just fine.

4 -- I have no idea what to recommend for Immunology. I think Stanley's book (assuming she hasn't published a completely revised edition) is a piece of crap. I used BRS Microbiology and Immunology, which is a very good book for review and a good reference once you already know the fundamentals. I still use this book to help me with Step 2. I would look at Lange's Micro/Immuno book; I'd bet a billion dollars it's wayyyy better. It covers Parasitology as well but is pretty thin (but then again, Parasit is just memorization).
