Additional books for First Term...

Hey everyone,
I am going to attend St. George's University this August. I know that payment for the first term books is included in the term's tuition, but I was just wondering if there are any other books worth purchasing for the first term. I am looking for books that are good supplements to the assigned texts or books that provide a good review for the Step 1 exam. I've seen the B.R.S and High-Yield books being mentioned on this forum, but I'm not quite sure if they are used by first termers. Any recommendations from current first termers or upperclassmen would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

books

I am going to tell you what I tell all newbies...get books YOU feel will help not the ones that somone else tells you to get. You will end up purchasing books because the person next to you has the book and you feel if you dont have it then you will not pass. Make sure you flip through all the books people suggest and see which ones will help you get through the course. Most books have the same content presented in different ways.

With all that said the Color atlas of Anatomy has really good picures to help you with dissections.

are the above books available in GND? or would it be a better idea to get them back home and bring them with us? just curious how expansive the bookstore is at SGU.

Most BRS books are available here in grenada, but it can be hit or miss, and if you miss, well...you missed. So i would recommend bringing down those in which you are interested in having. As a side-note about the netter flashcards: You will at some point in your first couple of weeks here get a copy of the "mac-daddy" cd from one of your friends or an upper termer or whatever. Most of them contain a netter program which has self quizzing (you label the plates, etc). This was really good for learning where stuff is, but when it came to applying a netter image to the actual cadaver...there is no substitue for lab time and a copy of rohens.

if your going to get any supplement books, get them at home. they are marked up beyond belief here. i bought chungs on amazon for 17 US dollars. most other brs books in the bookstore here are 100 + EC. you dont even need to be good at math to know that that is a rip off

yeah...i got some hand me down BRS books from people, and i dont remember really opening any of them more than once. you get a lot of material from the note-packets they hand out in class, and i concentrated on reading them and the notes i made off of those note packets, and i have done pretty well.

what i mean to say is, don't feel like you NEED to have the BRS books or whatever, i had them and never used them and i am glad i didnt spend any money on them!

thanks

Thanks for all the advice. Everyone has been a great help so far. I will definitely take it all into consideration when deciding what I need and what I don't.

Really?

Do people really take USMLE material down during the first term, even though the test isn't until after term 6?
Just curious....
