unhappy with the housing situation

Hey guys,
I am going to be a 2nd termer this fall, 2003. I, along with other upper termers, have been having difficulty finding a place to stay on campus this fall term. Apparently they have accepted upwards of 400 people for this august. At this point, i dont have a place to stay, and all people in administration have been giving me the run and around AND been saying "how unfortunate your (my) situation is, but there is nothing we can do about it."

I am totally unhappy, as where I will stay is uncertain. I dont want to live off campus, but if I have to I guess I will. I'd rather live with a first termer then go off campus, IMHO.

In any case, I dont have ANYTHING reserved, on or off campus. What the hell do I do at this point. Housing gave me a list of numbers for off campus, but I dont want to end up in a hotel for a couple of days before moving in. I kinda want to settle in right away.

If anyone has any advice, or knows of anything I can do, I would appreciate it.

-Dave

On or off??

Sory - can't help - haven't started at SGU yet. But out of interest why are you so keen to stay on-campus? Apart from convenience, what are the pros and cons of on and off-campus accommodation?

Dan.

HOusing

First of all, is there a particular reason your housing situation wasn't/couldnt be settled prior to your leaving for the term?

While sgu is indeed rampling up admissions (which is a bad Idea to my mind) the "400" you quote aren't all med students (just to clarify to the forum) About 300 are, which is still ridiculous.

In any event I would talk with Dawn in housing -in Grenada- and ask her for her help. You aren't guarented housing on campus so you really do need to see this as a "favor" when you approach her (I know, grit your teeth). Anyway she is the best bet; while you can suggest having a first term roomate I dont think that's likely since they want first termers to have the benefit of being with "their own" when they come in.

Good luck to you.

may be

Hey Dave,

If nothing works out for you on campus, I've got a couple friends who are renting a 4 bedroom house in L'ance aux epines for the fall. 2 guys bailed on them at the last moment, so they kinda need someone to split the bill with.
I don't know if you're interested.....but hey, where else u gonna go.

if u want more info, lemme know mate.

re:

Thanks for everyone's replies.

Danvet,
Living on campus is just more convenient. Its not far from class. You can literally roll out of bed and go to class. No need to wait a long time to catch a bus, or anything like that. Its better for my situation.

Steph,
I'll give Dawn a call. I called up and talked to people that manage the first term housing situation. I hope they can help me.

PMAJ,
What term are your buddies? If they are 2nd term, I probably know them. In any case, I MIGHT be want to do that. But the problem of having a car arises, and I dont nor have the finances to deal with that. But thank you for the offer. Give me an email I can either reach you at or the guys, and I'll keep them in mind.

Thanks, and I hope this works out.

And yeah, the whole accepting A LOT more people is just purely ridiculous.

-Dave

housing

On campus is cool for the first term....but after I really enjoyed off campus housing....coming home to a kitchen....good cable tv, AC...my own pad...and a car(managed to scrape up a deal-just to let you know... I was using the red colored loan monopoly bills)....really added some peace to an otherwise rather busy life(takes away the pre-exam 'fever' you'll see on campus). I stayed in two places in lans aux'pines(gosh...even forgotten the spelling)..... one with a pool in the same house as the head of counselling he's probably still there...the price was high so I moved out in the first month(you can do these things during the term so don't fret too much)...and the second was a goood pad...superclean...small but all the amenities...two bedroom ...glass cabinet kitchen with supplies..etc ..one bathroom 400US..which isn't bad given the other prices..."Mr. and Mrs.Samaan"...they have two student kids in the states so understand your position. Though I've been off the island for a term give it a shot...otherwise they have the hill top 'Grandview Apartments'...and they just finished a complex across from the school vet lab...but that one's probably full. Regardless...you know...you might be better off without... you'll easily manage accomodations with friends or school help(it's a big team down there)...and then you'll grab a deal...remember these guys really charge you high...so coming in late might be good...I got my place that I stayed with for over a year.... in the first few weeks while living somewhere else at that Grande anse sandwich shop-they knew the owners. feel free to send a note if there are any other details you need. Geoff

man you complain....

Avoid the roundhouses. Do go to Nick's though! The best guy.
You should not have left the island if you had no house to live! Now you may HAVE to live in a hotel for 1-2 days or crash at a friend's apt. Or go early and find a place. There are A LOT of apts on the bus route and in LAE (if you have car). The same way you got an apt as a first termer, new students deserve one too. Plus, it is more fun living off campus, you get to become independent and grow up.
One love...

i got the impression on campus was going to work out

medic,
the lady over in housing gave me the impression that I was going to get housing. i called up some people in the housing department in the east coast that deal with first termers. i dunno. i'm supposed to call them monday and they are supposed to do something for me.

this whole thing is a headache, and yeah, i SHOULD have gotten housing before I left. now i know what to do... and to make sure that I have everything set in stone.

sigh.
