there's a few kids at our school who had admission to NYCOM and chose SGU instead.
I really didn't like the NYCOM admin or students while we were there during the hurricane term, but I guess I can't blame em since we more than doubled their class size (although we were like the forgotten step-child denied use of everything). However, going to a DO school over SGU is a personal decision, and good luck to you if you choose that route. Both programs will give you the ultimate title of "doctor." If you don't like the outdoors, or don't really like to 'rough' it...maybe SGU isn't for you. It isn't like we sleep in tents and hunt for our food, but SGU caliber students have a certain adaptability that most other students simply don't have or aren't able to acquire. If you don't mind being inconvenienced once in a while (which in my opinion is a good thing because it keeps you humble), then come here for an adventure as well as an education. If you are the type of person that needs everything perfect at your whim and fancy, then SGU probably isn't for you. Good luck |

Well my advise, I think you should go DO, based on what you have gathered you seem to feel strongly about DO schools, and I dont really know if all this is worth the stress to someone like you. The truth is that I would have probably gone DO if I could, but I am not American, and it would be really stupid of me to become a DO if It meant that I could never go home. I dont see any bad outcome from your going to a DO school, there is a stigma attached to both DO and IMG's. I would advise doing further research on the DO school that you have been accepted into, see what their USMLE pass rates are etc. Because not all DO schools are equal, good luck with your decision, even though I have a feeling that you have already made up your mind

i must agree that i personally did not like the NYCOM faculty or students. i personally think we didnt use many of their resources and we were only allowed in certain areas. It was actually kind of comical in that there was an area that was not allowed but we had to walk there to get to the allowed area. The whole thing was kind of ridiculous. The NYCOM students did not welcome the change either. I had a friend who was attending NYCOM at the time and he told me what the students' reactions were. He didn't because being a Floridian he understood what was like to be displaced by a hurricane. SGU is doable but you have to get tough... if you aren't already. No piece of cake...

I think SGU grads and DO grads are basically on even terms when it comes to residency. However, I do think there is a big difference between SGU and other caribbean schools. We have built a good reputation (at least in NY) and many of the univeristy programs continue to take SGU grads based on past experience.
