foley catheter....
hey i gotta question for those who have been through vinnies already.....
how hard is it to stick a foley in a patient? i was in the hospital today and just noticed the girth of the tube. is there anesthetic involved? how do you know if you've hit the bladder? enquiring minds want to know. |

No anesthetic - just betadine and lubricating jelly. Males: Relatively easy... You really can't miss, the only tough part is getting by the prostate. Females: Tougher... Especially in obese patients, a lot of attempts are blind. You know you're in the bladder when urine starts to flow through the foley.

(Note: I have catherterized myself before, but only with the IV kind, not the urinary kind. I am avoiding the latter at all possible costs.) |

For those difficult to catheter females, you may not be able to easily visualize the urethra. However, once you swab over it w/ betadine, it'll wink at ya. No kiddin. And, if you still can't find it, stick your finger in the vagina and slide the foley in. Given you have a basic idea where the urethra is suppose to be.
wish they had an emoticon that just gives a big ol' wink. |

Emt039,
What were you going for the sapphenous? Otherwise, as I remember it, upper limb "auto-sticks" get pretty messy (bloody).

Nope, our instructors made us do our first ever IV stick on ourselves. While all of the rest of the class was struggling with doing it backwards into the AC, I just quickly and neatly slid it into my hand. Though since then I have had a few successful (and a few failed) attempts at self-sticks into my AC to prevent the dehydration caused by the inhibition of ADH. :-) |
