your schools fail policy?

like at ross, if one fails, s/he has to repeat the entire semester. And s/he can't even drop a class if s/he even wants to.

so anyone can tell me about your school's fail policy?

fail

if you fail a class that is less than 4 units, u get to take a make-up final. If you fail a big class you have to retake it the next term and they will decel you. Which means you will take some of the next terms classes with the class u are retaking. For example if 1st term you failed biochem but passed everything else you would retake biochem and take immuno and genetics, instead of neuro, physio, genetics, parasit and immuno.

good

that is very reasonable. ross is being ridiculous, asking us to repeat the whole semester, we can't even drop any class.

dropping

You can also choose to drop classes if you feel overwhelmed or think you might fail, you become an alternate student which is pretty much the same as decelling if I understand it correctly. But it doesn't look good b/c it will be on your transcript that it took you longer to finish school than the usual academis schedule. They may ask you about it when applying for a residency. You shouldn't think about failing especially if you haven't even started yet. I remember asking about failing rules of schools when I applied, but maybe I should have. Thank God I am not failing though.

From the Student Manual... (and apparently from all the rumors flying around at midterm time, not enough people read...)

Quote:
Academic Standards The Academic Progress Committee reviews the progress of each student by the end of each academic year and at the end of an interim term if a student is on academic probation. Based on its review of a student’s progress the Committee makes decisions on the promotion and retention of a student according to the following standards. There are qualitative and quantitative standards for academic progress, promotion and retention. The quantitative standard relates to a student’s progression through the academic program in a timely fashion. The qualitative standards relate to the percentage of satisfactorily completed course work in the academic year and a student meeting the minimum standard; which is the total number of credit hours attempted multiplied by two.

Quantitative Standards

A student must pass all required core coursework. In order to make satisfactory academic progress, students (including those on alternate programs) must successfully complete at least 60% of the attempted academic curriculum of the academic year. Students are expected to complete the medical program within four calendar years (or five academic years). As of August, 2003, the maximum time allowable for completion of the medical program is six years. The Medical Program is divided into three segments (inclusive of LOAs, alternate academic programs, and/or repetition of course work), as follows:

Time allocation:
Basic Sciences: 3 years maximum Interim Period *: 0.5 years maximum Clinical Sciences: 3 years maximum * A six month extension may be approved by the Dean of Students for extenuating circumstances. Failure to complete any component in the allotted time will result in academic dismissal. Within the given calendar year guidelines, students must complete a minimum of 60% of the medical school curriculum for each year. It must be emphasized that the above segments are the maximum allowable, not the expected.

Qualitative Standards

It is recommended that a student failing a first-term course of four (4) credit hours or more, whether on alternate program or not, be recommended for dismissal.

Minimum Grade Point Standard: The minimum standard is defined as the total number of credit hours attempted multiplied by two, this yields the minimum number of grade points needed. A student must be within 15 grade points of the minimum standard. If a student has a deficit of 15 points or less they may/may not be permitted to continue as determined by the Academic Progress Committee. If the deficit grade point is greater than 15, the student will be recommended for dismissal.

The following cumulative grade point average (GPA) standards are used for the evaluation of students by the APC:

Cumulative GPA = 4.0 Students will be placed on the Chancellor’s List and promoted to the next term.
Cumulative GPA > 3.5 Students will be placed on Dean’s List and promoted to the next term.
Cumulative GPA is equal to or between 2.0 and 2.25 Student will be mandated by the APC to be placed in the Alternate Academic Program.* * In the Alternate Academic Program, a student takes a prescribed program of courses which entails an extra term to complete the basic sciences. A student in this program must be cognizant of time allowances as he/she moves through the program.
The Alternate Academic Program, aka deceling, is basically taking one term and splitting it in two, so that you only take half the classes and take 2 semesters to complete 1 semester of coursework.

fail

If you fail any class other than embryo during the midterms you get a very nice letter in the mail that says that your performance is not up to par after the midterms. you are then given the option to decel up to the time when 66% of the class time has gone by. At this time you either drop Biochem and Embryo or anatomy and histo. If you fail biochem or anatomy you are sent home with a dismissal letter which would be the end of your medical carreer. You can appeal but you better have a very good excuse such as I broke my leg (with doctors notice) or two family members died at the same time etc. If the appeal is accepted then you retake the class you failed in plus a few classes from second term. but the 0 grade stays on your transcript!!
So its a risk. If you fail a midterm and you know you could have done better then study more for the final. if you are over your head then decel.

Med School

This is Med School--it's not supposed to be easy! Work hard and don't waste a lot time--you'll do fine. If you set yourself up for a failure or having to decel and you probably will. Remain positive. Good luck!
