    HUGE Laptop Problem... Literally

Ok, I bought a toshiba laptop for the first term. Basically its freakin huge and weighs 9.9lbs with 17" LCD. I wanted to know from the students currently at SGU or going, do you guys carry around your laptops a lot like from dorm to class to library etc? or do you just leave it at home most of the time? Cause if I have to move it around all the time, I'd rather return it during my 2 week warrenty and get a smaller laptop. I dont think this thing will fit on the classroom desks

    Thanks in advance

    lol

I've got a dell that is huge as well. The point of having a laptop is to carry it around, take it to class, etc. And you make a great point about desk space.

So you might want to get the smaller model if you find it difficult to carry. A smaller model may not have as nice and large of a screen, or be able to play Madden 2005 at the top resolution, but you will save your back and arm some soreness.
It's all about your priorities. I gotta have the power.....and I don't mind having to build muscle to have the beast...
As an aside, though, in my experience the smaller business models take abuse a little better.

    re: big prob

remember: you're also going to be carrying some of your books around too: like your netter, and moore, and maybe your biochem, histo, embryo, and anatomy notes (not at the same time hopefully.....).

being in first term (I'm assuming you're in first term), you're going to be taking buses to campus, and thus you'll be bringing almost all of your stuff for the day to campus with you - hence a large load, made a bit larger by your laptop. just some stuff I thought I should point out.....

I have a 7.5lb dell (15.4"), and I love it, but I don't think I could handle anything larger - my backpack gets a bit heavy after I throw in a couple of textbooks, note packets, and a bottle of water.

In first term you carry your computer everywhere, all the time; to class, library, to call home, download lectures etc. Specially since you guys are living off campus, running back to your room just to drop off your machine wouldn't be an option. I'd opt for a smaller, lighter one if I'm given a choice.

    laptop

I don't know who these people are that were carrying their laptops around all the time because I know I wasn't. I brought my laptop from my room to the study center in my building (SD1) and back again. That was it. However, I do agree that 7.5 lbs should be your max, even if you're not carrying it around a lot, because more than that and you won't even want to bring it to the study center.

    ...

Since I lived in a building without internet, I brought my computer to class so I could go to the library afterwards to check email, VMD, etc. After that I went home to study without internet - much easier :-)

With the weight of your first term books (someone has a pic posted up here... there are at least 15 of them..), you definately don't need a heavy computer to lug around. I have an "ultra light" (4.9 lb), and my back still hurt with all the weight.

    Laptop

Are there outlets in the classroom to plug up the laptops or do you have to rely solely on the battery? My battery tends not to last very long for some reason, is there something I can do about that? I assume the library would have outlets, but are they 110 or 220v?

bell hall (1st and 2nd term) have very few outlets and most of them are located in the back

bourne hall there is an outlet in every seat.

really not much use for a computer in class. pre-read the lecture the night before and enjoy the lecture the day of.
