    Questions...

Whats the deal with mailing some of our belongings to Grenada?
    Are there taxes/duties involved?

Also, what cell phone carriers are on the island? I want to have my phone set up before I leave. BTW, should I bring my cell?

Mailing things: Expect to be taxed on everything, be pleasantly surprised if you aren't. Be polite and very curteous; don't complain about waiting for an hour while they do paperwork. Think before you ship--do you REALLY need or want it? I used amerijet and had a good experience.

Cell: Digicell, Cable and Wireless, AT&T. I have AT&T, never upset with service. I had service everywhere, even through the grand etang. C&W was the only company to have service immediately post-Ivan, but past that they pretty much suck. Digicell is not great either. I would recommend against bringing a phone. There are usually great deals for students when you get there. My wife and I each got a Sagem (some french brand ithink) phone (which was nice and small with color screen, games, alarm, etc), and a $50EC phone card for $95 EC. It was a really good deal, and you can expect similar bargains when you get down to GND. Also, I am not sure how the cingular/att merge will affect service, but ti can only make it better! If you must bring a phone, it needs to be an unlocked GSM phone. Almost everybody gets the prepaid plans, they are the best. Your outgoing calls are resonalble, 99cents EC per minute to the states, cheaper for local callls, and ALL incoming calls are FREE, including international calls.

Thanks Andy. The info really helped.
I guess I'll be waiting until I get there to get a phone then.

    bringing your phone down

I have ATT also and I had no complaints except that service was shady in my SD2 room but once outside it was crystal. My cingular phone from the states works there it is GSM but only with the post pay plan (monthly bill). I didnt want that so I just bought the compatible phone a sagem also that worked as a pre paid phone using phone cards. That seems to be the most popular among students. But there SIM cards will work in most GSM ATT/Cingular phones if you want the post pay plan.
