    Home for Christmas

So when do we start giving up our holidays? I knew very well from the beginning that the life of a doctor requires at times to spend holidays at the hospital and away from family. But when can i expect that to start? clinicals or residency?

It depends what hospital you do your clinical rotations at I'd say. The overwhelming majority though will give you off for the holidays. It also depends on what rotation you are doing near the holidays. My situation is by far the exception and not the rule. I'm at Jamaica hospital and my first day of my trauma month is Christmas day. I'm also on Jan 31. We had a clinical rotation written final the day after thanksgiving too. Needless to say this holiday season for myself is not the greatest. I think though to answer your question, the early years of residency is where things take a turn for the worse and slowly get better the more senior you are. That's just my guess. Maybe some grads etc.. can elaborate further.

depends upon how clever you are. Ive never missed a major holiday or birthday (or have traded, say, newyears for christmas).
