COMPETITIVE RESIDENCIES AND FELLOWSHIPS

Can any St.G's graduate tell me how hard it would to get a fellowship in GI, cardiology, nephrology coming from St.G's? I know people have done it in past, but it appears more and more the that's not the case anymore, at least according to what is on the website. Also how hard would it be to get a residency in anesthesia, neurology, emergency medicine, or surgery at a respectable teaching hospital coming from ST.G's?

Competitive Residencies and Fellowships

Can't comment on fellowships. "Respectable teaching hospital" is a relative term. As for residencies, look at the list for the past 5 years for where people matched. It's on the school's webpage. Then you can decide for yourself which of those places and programs you consider competitive/respectable.

I doubt there are any impossible hurdles for those willing to put in the effort -- just a bunch of difficult ones.

nephro isnt too tough; cards and gi are tougher but i just ran into an sgu grad at harvard's gi fellowship program. you wouldnt read about it on the website since these arent residencies but fellowships. sgu doesnt keep track of fellowships and only recently residencies with any degree of completeness.

fellowship and residency

Fellowships are determined moe by where you do your residency than med school. If you are in a large IM - university program with several fellowships then your chances are better. But I have seen people get cards and nephrology fellowships that were SGU grads.

Residency in good university programs is harder to come by as a FMG but not impossible. The guys that I knew who got Neurology and Anesthesia residency at the good places were all good students so these are totally in graps with a solid performance. Same for EM , detroit receiving, highland, usc, and shock-trauma are all solid EM programs where we have had our grads match.

id qualify this a bit in two ways; first is that while site of residency has a big effect on site of fellowship, site of medical school has a big effect on site of residency. but more importantly than that niggling little fact is that while it does matter where you go to med school, your residency performance matters a lot too; as i say, sgu fellows are all over and in all fields; cards, gi etc.
