    What to bring 2012?

Hey everyone. I'll be heading to the island in a few weeks, and I was wondering if we could get an updated thread of what we need to bring. I'll be in CFP, so feel free to suggest any books that might be helpful, but i'm primarily wondering what we should bring in terms of cookware, whether we need a wireless router, printer, what types of cookware...that kinda thing.

    Thanks,
    Brad

Not that much changes from year to year. Search for the older threads, go through the lists available, pull out all items you think you might need, compile them into a new list, then post that list here in this thread. I, for one, would be far more willing to put in the time to go through your list and give you advice on what to keep on it, what to cross out and what to add, than if you ask me to do the job for you and compile a list.

Showing initiative, doing as much of the work as you can, not expecting others to do the work for you impresses people positively.

Brad, bring brand name things that you might want. They can be hard to find here. other than that jsut the essentials. you can pick up a lot of what you need of the SGU post and from stores.

I'm not much of a cook, but I found good thick frying pans to be scarce and really expensive in Grenada. I'm not sure if the triples have an actual oven, but if not, no reason to bring bakeware without one. Some people are really attached to their knives, but I would find that to be a hassle if you aren't one of them. Dishware, silverware, and small utensils (spice graters, spatulas, etc) are available at the hardware store. You can also bring a personal set. Electrical appliances are expensive on the island (toaster ovens, coffee makers, etc) but they're also large and difficult to pack. Outgoing students tend to sell them used and they hold value. Printer, personal choice. Pain to pack and expensive but nice when first termers are printing out huge books of anatomy notes.

I'm going to post my list later, but I think I am going to try and go as paperless as possible first semester. I have a Thinkpad tablet, so hopefully I can take all my notes on that, but i'll bring a few binders in case I need to copy notes or I have classes where the laptop doesn't work.

    Thanks everyone!

I would advise against binders, unless you are someone who really loves binders, binder rings take much less space and can keep your papers just as organized.

My wife has been keeping a blog about life in Grenada.
She made a category for "what to pack"

Go to Google and search "hello grenada"
The website is grenadaguide dot blogspot dot com

    Best of luck~!

Alright, here's my list. Thanks to DM2orihC and the "Welcome to Greneda" guide for assistance with this list. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Brad

    • Toiletries
    ○ Toothpaste/electric toothbrush
    ○ Electric Razor/ Beard Trimmer
    ○ Presumably I don't need shampoo and soap, as I am not remotely picky about brands?
    ○ Do I need to bring sunscreen, or can I get that down there?
    ○ Towels?

    • Kitchenware
    ○ Electric Kettle
    ○ Few sets of plates and silverware??
    ○ Pan and spatula
    ○ Decent set of knives?

    • Clothing
    ○ Jackets & such
    § Rain Jacket
    § Poncho?
    § Umbrella?
    § Backpack cover
    ○ Regular clothing (t-shirts, shorts, pair of jeans, belt, socks, etc)
    ○ One set of dress clothing (button-down, tie, khakis)
    ○ Athletic gear
    ○ Not sure if I need scrubs for CFP or not, I would like to know so I don't have to buy a set down there?
    ○ Footwear
§ I'm thinking a pair of Teva's, some Chaco's, running shoes, tennis shoes, dress shoes (am I overdoing it here?)
    ○ Sunglasses
    ○ Hats!

    • Electronics
    ○ Kindle
    ○ Cables
    ○ Powerstrip (and power cords, as I hear the outlets in the dorms aren't exactly "plentiful")

    • Other school supplies
    ○ Backpack

what the heck is a backpack cover?

the rain is so spotty that the rain gear isn't that useful, but if you have room in your bags, it can't hurt to have it...

    ○ Electric Razor/ Beard Trimmer
    ○ Presumably I don't need shampoo and soap, as I am not remotely picky about brands?
    ○ Do I need to bring sunscreen, or can I get that down there? Sunscreen is on the expensive side, and if you have a particular type that works well with your skin, I'd advise you to bring it
    ○ Towels? Yes

    • Kitchenware
    ○ Electric Kettle
    ○ Few sets of plates and silverware?? Don't go crazy with these, bring just a few things to get you through first term, at the end of the term there will be a massive sale and you can buy stuff from the students who are leaving the island
    ○ Pan and spatula See above
    ○ Decent set of knives? Depends on how much serious cooking you are planning on doing, again see above

    • Clothing
    ○ Jackets & such I'd say pick either a pocho or a rain jacket, bringing both is a waste of space, a large poncho will serve you better since you can throw it over yourself and your backpack, instead you should bring a hoodie or two since study spaces and dorms can be freezing cold
    § Rain Jacket
    § Poncho?
    § Umbrella?
    § Backpack cover
    ○ Regular clothing (t-shirts, shorts, pair of jeans, belt, socks, etc)
    ○ One set of dress clothing (button-down, tie, khakis)
    ○ Athletic gear ?? as in?
    ○ Not sure if I need scrubs for CFP or not, I would like to know so I don't have to buy a set down there? No clue, but hopefully someone who has been in CFP (I'm assuming that's Foundations) will chime in
    ○ Footwear
§ I'm thinking a pair of Teva's, some Chaco's, running shoes, tennis shoes, dress shoes (am I overdoing it here?) - You are only here for a few months at a time, 1 pair of running shoes, 1 pair of sandals and 1 pair of dress shoes should be enough, and don't forget a pair of flip-flops for the shower/beach
    ○ Sunglasses
    ○ Hats!

    • Electronics
    ○ Kindle
    ○ Cables
    ○ Powerstrip (and power cords, as I hear the outlets in the dorms aren't exactly "plentiful") You can buy a powerstrip for a decent price at the electronics store in Round Houses (at least you could as of 1-2 years ago), so if you are running out of room don't stress about this
    ○ Flash drives, external HDD, etc
    ○ Calculator I'm guessing you are going to have a cell phone, and they all come with calculators these days, but I don't know if in CFP you need an actual calculator, so hopefully someone can enlighten us, but for basic sciences you won't really need it, just use your computer/phone/fingers
    ○ Flashlight (mini-mag light)

    • Other school supplies
    ○ Backpack
    ○ Notebooks, pens, paper, multi-colored highlighters, binders, pencils, and index cards Index cards are cheap and can be easily purchased from Bryden and Minors

    • Stocked first aid kit
    • Duct tape. Do I need any other tape?
    • Bedding
