Question SGU Mph to MD or Ross MD

Hello! I was just accepted to Ross MD for August 2012 and have an interview with SGU for MPH to MD for August 2012.

What should I do in terms of where the schools will stand in the next 4 years? I also want to get a quality clinical rotation spot in New York City and do residency there as well. Also, although I would be interested in studying for the MPH I'm not entirely in favor for getting it before medical school if at all, however if SGU is worth the money, and the years spent on the island vs Ross, then I would do it. However there is also the risk of not getting into the SGU MD program after the first semester.. have to maintain a 3.5 the first semester of MPH classes to get accepted into the January 2012 SGU MD program.

Ross MD sounds great since it's only 16 months on the island.. however SGU has better living conditions, which I guess would help withstand the longer stay there (24 months).

Also I already told SGU that I got accepted to Ross, but the counselor told me I need to go in to the interview to be considered for both the MD and MPH programs if I want an interview, because my current application is weak. (I had to sign an addendum for the MPH)

I've been in med school long enough that I'm about to start my fifth year and I agree that you should go to the best school you can rather than the easiest school.

I'm assuming here you want to be at least a good physician. For those aiming for a few standard deviations to the left of the mean I guess maybe you do want a school that hands you a diploma.

Keep in mind that although you may be starting at Ross 1 year earlier, majority of Ross students do not take only 4 years to finish med school and get residency. Many are held back a term, take longer to study for steps, don't get residency the first time, able to get rotations back to back that would allow you to finish it in 4 years and enough time to meet the match...etc. I would estimate at least 50% of Ross students don't finish med school in 4 years and get residency right away. So keep that in mind.. so you maybe starting a year earlier, but chances are, you won't be finishing a year earlier vs SGU
SGU also has a big proportion of students that don't finish in 4 years and get residency either, but it is lower, and the rotations in clinical years, SGU are more able to book back to back with no downtime vs Ross.

You are not far enough in the process to be this jaded... You may think it's cool to bash SGU, but if you've done a decent job studying on the rock you will soon realize that you have gotten a solid education, and not just compared to the Ross students, but even to USMD students from mid to low tier schools (I can't compare to higher tier schools since I haven't rotated with them). Also, some of the residents I've met on rotations who come from DO schools have horror stories of how they had to scramble to find rotation spots, which has been a real eye-opener for me. So looking at the bigger picture, SGU is a great choice for anyone who can't get into a USMD school and doesn't want to go to or can't get into the top few DO schools.

Phren? Are you feeling okay? Or maybe your account was hacked... if not, you should really check your temperature.

You know I don't mince words when it comes to calling out our school on some of the stupid poop we've got going on (read: CS department and 4th year scheduling). but I have to give credit where credit is due. I'm not even at the top of my class, but I'm still a very well educated future doctor and the US med school students who have rotated with us have nothing on me or anyone else in my current group.
