Must Have Needs for SGU, Moving in Tips

Hi guys, I just recently got accepted to SGU and I'm extremely excited. I have a few questions about actually moving into SGU.

First and most importantly what books or school needed items are not easily available that I should bring from the US? Are there helpful books or resources that would be good supplement material that i should buy and bring?

What did you guys do with your electronics? Leave them home or bring them? I have a laptop but would prefer to bring my 24 inch monitor to hook them up and use while in the room but would that be even possible to take with me?

I also didn't want to take more than 2 luggages at max trying to be 1 and wanted to know would it be a bad idea if i did not bring a pillow, blanket, and bed sheets? How is the idea of mailing stuff to where I will be living?

Are there any most haves to bring/buy before i get to the island. I don't mean stuff such as health/hygenie products but maybe more higher cost items

What is the recommended type of clothes would it be too hot for pants?

I will be living on campus too if anyone could help me find more information on their dorms that would be great!

    THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!!!

In terms of electronics, if you can fit it bring a monitor and some decent desktop speakers!

Also bring some memory foam bedding, nearly all my friends had one and was getting jealous them.

BRING A STUDY LAMP +/- GENERAL LAMP, the lighting in dorms sucks as it's all fluorescent white lights which burns your eyes.

Is it expensive to buy bedding there?

You can always use the monitors in Upper Tay. Just saying. Also, there have been incidents (though few) of people having electronics stolen from their rooms and a 24" monitor isn't something that can be hidden. You won't have a ton of desk room either, so that's something to consider.

Bedding is expensive down there, but also cheaply made. I would suggest bringing it in vacuum bags. I fit two pillows, a queen quilt (thinner than a comforter) and two sets of sheets in my luggage with all my clothing. If you want to ship, you can use AmeriJet (will have to pick up at AmeriJet location at airport or there is a building right off the bus route) or FedEx, DHL, or USPS. USPS will go to the post office (Grand Anse bus to the #1 to Burns Point), not campus (the guy in the bookstore will go get it for you if you pay 18EC I think.) FedEx and DHL will go to campus after you pay the customs on the package. You will get a box number when you get to campus and get a mail box.
Nevertheless, I think bringing a 2nd bag on a plane is much cheaper than shipping.

Clothes, bring what you would wear during the summer. If you wear jean, bring jeans, if you wear dresses, bring dresses.

Hi thanks for the information. What do you mean though about incidents of electronics stolen that can't be hidden? Do the rooms not lock? Is it roommate? or someone breaking in?

Also regarding the dorms? I couldn't figure out was it shared bedrooms or shared living rooms? I couldn't find anywhere with square feet size either if someone knows.

On a side note: i was reading the internet policy at SGU and it seemed extremely strict. Is it possible to use facebook or websites that might not necessarily be used for educational value?

    Thanks so much everyone!

My friend had a monitor AND a PS3 for 3 terms whilst in SD6 (the same size desk as first termers) and nothing ever happened to it. It was thanks to that PS3 that I now know how to play American football.....with my fingers

Campus internet has no blocks on it at all except for things like torrent programs which leach bandwidth. Some dorms have a New York ISP so certain TV streaming sites work in those dorm (I know it's SD6/Z building and a couple other dorms)

Most of the theft on campus is by Security and Housekeeping, though I don't doubt there is student theft as well. Someone definitely steals cookies from the shelves outside Tay. It's mostly for 1st floor rooms (ground floor.) I know of a few iPhones that were taken. Not sure how feasible it is for a 24" monitor to go, but I'm just telling you that you may not want to bring your best to the island.

There are doubles: 2 beds, 2 desks, bathroom, kitchenette, no living/sitting area. And triples: 3 tiny, tiny rooms with a bed closet desk sitch, toilet, shower, dining table and kitchenette. That's basically it for 1st term. The rooms are sufficient but by no means large or even medium.

Nope, like Prash said, anything goes. Not sure why the internet policy would make you think that. You should have been on the rock during the dreaded NO iTUNES days. *shudder* Those were rough.

SD5, SD7 and SD1 have NY ISPs... not sure about the others.
