    NBME Practice and USMLE Correlation

    Advertisements

Can some students who are further along comment on their NBME score and how they scored on the actual Step?
I would like to get an idea of the average increase from the practice one given in Grenada to the real thing.

From the predicted Step 1 score from the Grenada NBME to the actual Step 1 exam I improved a solid 4 points. And yes, that's on the 3 digit scale.

Foo also didn't have many points to gain from his NBME score... so let's put that in perspective.

It is possible to improve by as many as 30-35 points (one person I know did just that), or even with work/other commitments by 15-18 points (as I did), that's assuming you have realistic room to improve. If you start out with a very high NBME score, you will probably not improve by as many points.

I improved 26 points from my NBME administered in Grenada to my Step 1 score. I took NMBE 6 & 7 independently during my studying for Step 1 and improved 5 and 7 points respectively. Bottom line, with time and effort, my Step 1 score improved.

Step 1 was harder and more brutal than the 3 NBME exams I took because Step 1 was longer and I was in a stressful testing center with knowledge that this is the real deal. That being said, I know people who didn't improve between their NBME's at SGU and their Step score and those that improved greater than I did. There are some online standardized curves where you plug your NBME scores and USMLE World precentages to give you an estimate on your expected Step 1 score, but I don't remember them being backed by any real hard data. So, it could be someone's wild correlation they made up. It is safe to assume that there seems like there's no honest correlation to NBME scores and expected Step 1 score at this time because we just don't the data -- just anectodal evidence.

I feel that you could be looking for some reassurance and assessment of your baseline based on your NBME and how your expect your Step 1 projection to be... I was there and I did the same. Consider that this is not a realistic approach to taking your first NBME. Try your hardest on the NBME, really dig deep to answer the question the best you can. Use this opportunity to get situiated with how questions will appear... Especially how random they will be. Learn how to pace yourself, how to read vingettes in a time efficient manner. And most importantly, refocus on what concepts & areas you are deficient on. Don't be dismayed or over confident with your performance on the NBME's either, like I said I know people who went down, stayed the same, or went higher.

Improved 33 points from my NBME in Grenada. 23 Points higher than NBME 6 & 7, 5 points lower than NBME 11 and 10 points lower than NBME 12 the week before the exam. Go figure!

When I took the exam a 99 started at 230.... nowadays I heard it is graded harsher. 260 was a 90 or something ludicrous like that, so that might change the comparisons, unless they updated their NBME scales too.
