Thread: Students beware: Dangerous housing

I want to warn anyone looking for housing that there are landlords who are NOT SAFE to rent from in Grenada. I lived in Lance Aux Epines on Wits End Road while attending SGU and rented from B.A. He refused to give our security deposit back to us for no reason. In fact, when my roomate asked him about getting the deposit back, he screamed at her and seemed a little "off." We went to talk to the housing department about it and told them that we did not feel safe staying there anymore. They told us they "did not like to get involved." They also said that they do not regulate who advertises on the school website and could not control if our landlord continued to advertise to students.

The day before we left Grenada, he forced his way into our apartment, demanded rent for the month (which we had already paid the week before) plus more money for a fake electric bill. He told us, "You owe me this month's rent. You have no receipt, so you have no proof that you already paid!" When we told him no, he started screaming at us, shoved my roomate and raised his fist to hit her. I told him not to touch her and he said "Oh, a girl who has never been hit! You're still in my country, I can mess you." He said he was going to "search for something valuable" to keep and threw our belongings outside. He called us names and said we had 5 minutes to get out or he was calling the police because we were trespassing. SGU security refused to take us to the U.S. Embassy and told us we should go to the local police station instead. We went to the police but they did nothing. Once we were home we spoke to the Grenadian ambassador and he said there is nothing he can do. PLEASE pass this message along!

And now, even with the wonderfully detailed post about places I've never heard bad things about, I will reiterate what tin said... LIVE ON CAMPUS FIRST TERM. The money really isn't a huge deal, and the last thing you need is to learn how to learn PLUS have to commute and not be on campus with most of your term.

In first term.........you guys will be adapting to a lot of new stuff............especially the work load and the curriculum. This is the time you will get a feel of the campus, the neighborhood surrounding the school, your study habits.... and what generally works for you and what doesn't.

You don't want to deal with a crappy apartment, insane landlord, crazy neighbors, a commute with all the stress of school. A lot of people I knew lived off campus and didn't realize that they couldn't handle the workload in first term........dropped out..........and were stuck with a lease agreement they couldn't adhere to.

Living in Lance Aux Epines for first term. I was a foundations student though. Hopefully it isn't a big deal. My landlord seemed cool so I doubt I'll have any of those problems. People do need to be careful though. Just heard a story about how someone's place was broken into, while they were home, by guys with machetes. Made the student sit in the corner while they took her stuff. At least she wasn't hurt but that blows.

Sal, wholeheartedly agree. Not only do you get a feel for the place, but you can meet prospective roommates and potentially, get a large enough party of cohabitants together to affordably rent one of those beach houses and split a car.

That being said, I'll throw in a rec for Cool Runnings so long as the owner is the same. It's a bit too pricy, but always felt safe at home even roaming the grounds at night (insomniac), not a lot of unwanted fauna in the apartment for a tropical island, pet friendly (I didn't have one, but it's important to a lot of people), no-coin washer/dryer on property, and no fight on the security deposit when I left. The portion of the Dusty Highway going by it was paved while I was living there so no having to wade through the mud from the bus stop holding your groceries during the rainy season. Still, I knew some people that lived in beach front awesomeness for less money so shop around. Talk to your upper termers.
