Setting up your own third year core rotations

Just wondering if anyone has setup their third year rotations outside of the university affiliated hospitals, and if so, where?

Also, just wondering if there were any limitations or guidelines to setting up your own THIRD YEAR core rotations outside of the university affiliated hospitals? I realize that some state medical boards say "You must complete the final year of medical education at the school that awarded you the degree." (as it says on the ny medical board website, http://www.op.nysed.gov/medlic.htm) but I just want to know about setting up third year rotations outside of the affiliated hospitals. Any and all information will be much appreciated. Thank you.

    heres the deal....

SGU requires that you do ALL of your third year rotations at AFFILIATED hospitals. They will give you a choice of select hospitals in 5th/6th term and you will choose your top 3. Then they will place you in one of them. Most students end up doing their 3rd year in one hospital entirely. This is what is known as a "clinical center" and SGU is starting to utilize this concept more and more.

    Its that simple.

In your 4th year YOU set up ALL of your rotations on your own. This means you choose the hospitals and make your schedule......the school only requires that you tell them where you will be going for each rotation. You do most of them at SGU affiliates and you are allowed to do 12 weeks at unaffiliated hospitals anywhere.

And just FYI ....3rd year consists of 42 weeks of rotations, 4th year consists of 38 weeks.

You can also read more about this stuff on the SGU website.

    rotations...

However, keep in mind some of the states you may want to end up practicing in. I know it seems like a decade away and it actually might be but some states (like my good ole home state of texas!) require that ALL of your rotations be done at school affiliated hospitals. So if you want to go to a particular state in the future I suggest that all students during their third year become familiar with requirements that states have for licensure in that particular state. Like neurology and FP rotation for Texas or just FP and L6 forms for Cali...etc. Rotations like FP and nero are not required by the school so its and option. However some of the hospitals that you might get placed for the cores have some of these rotations built in to their 3rd year whether you like to or not. Like neuro at LICH and EM at Methodist.
Knowing the requirements beforehand will save you a big headache in the future.
