Thread: Troubles-American Airlines

Once again, I have called american airlines and have been told that all I can take is a max weight of 70lbs and then a 40lb cary-on. Are other airlines limiting luggage like this. I'm leaving tomorrow and have to severly strip down the amount of stuff i was going to bring to the rock. Do airlines tell you this to scare you into bringing less luggage? Has anyone that has already arrived in Grenada had this problem?

Hey, I am answering because i feel like you are in a rush and you might just take a non-expert answer over no answer. I am just a first-termer, but I have been reading this quite a bit, so here goes:

As far as I know, AA only allows a total of 70lbs for both bags, and 40lbs for the carryon. Air Jamaica allows 70lbs. PER bag, and then 40lbs for the carryon. I don't think AA is kidding when they say it, I think it's their policy.

From what i have read on this website and from talking to people, AA has a better record on NOT losing your bags, but Air Jamaica allows you more weight. AA might let you bring more than the total 70lbs weight, but they might put it on another plane that doesn't have too much weight, so you might not get one or more of your bags until a few days after your arrival.

You can have stuff shipped via Amerijet or fedex or whatever, but I think it costs a decent penny. Also, I think you might be able to pay AA for extra weight, but again, it might not get there WITH you, and it might cost a few more bucks than you are willing to spend.

this is a debatable topic:

even if you don't stay at the weight restriction, your bags may still be left behind at san juan. This is simply due to the backlog they get with the plane being completely full.

as for disregarding their 70 lb limit: up to you. Many people get away with it because most of the check in people are unaware of the different policy that american eagle has (than american airlines, which most people take down to san juan). use your discretion - might be worth the risk might not. worst comes to worst, they'll make you remove the extra weight at checkin.

oh yeah, I believe aa is NOT allowing you to pay for extra weight!!! something about an embargo this time of year.

The times my friends and I flew with Air Jamaica we never even got our bags late. They were always with us on the same flight. I have heard of a few people that got their bags 1 day late but nobody has said anything about losing bags. On the other hand I do know AA has lost peoples luggage and some come in 4-5 days late. Air Jamaica does allow you to bring extra boxes at I believe $40 a box that can weigh up to 70lbs (A friend brought 7 boxes on top of her luggage!). AA only allows 70lbs total but like the previous posts states you can get away with it sometimes.
I think Air Jamaica is worth the extra dough. But that is my opinion. Besides I wasnt to fond of the American Eagle planes!

I have flown AA every single time I've come to Grenada and I have always brought two 70 lb suitcases (each 70 lb not combined). I have always gotten my luggage the same day. I haven't had to pay anything either.

It's best to call AA and confirm because different flights have different baggage restrictions (18004337300) depending on the origin and destination of the flight. For example, a flight from Toronto to GND allows for two checked pieces not to exceed 70lbs EACH plus one carryon not to exceed 40lbs and 45 inches (L+W+H).

Its the American Eagle part of the route that limits your bags to 70lbs total. On the AA part, you can take 2 70 lb bags, but they may get held in San Juan (they may all get held up there and no Air Jamaica usually has the better record with bags, but with carnival and all... its usually the rule that you don't get your bags the same day with AA).
And , yes, AA Eagle has an embargo during the month of sept. on extra bags(again this will be up to the mood of the person that checks you in).
AJ will allow you to buy excess baggage, but it is up to $75 now(you can bring up to 5 extra bags).
Remember if you ship with AmeriJet you will probably have to pay duty on top of the ship charge(and duty is charged on the shipping costs as well)so that can cost a pretty penny.

dont' forget to consider BWIA (BWEE!!) depending on where you live.
They allow 2 75 lb bags, and one 16 lb carryon (that's right - the carryon is only 16lbs!!). BUT they have an embargo on extra weight (not even allowed to pay extra - a dude behind me at checkin had to take out 20 lbs of stuff)

Just to let people know - this term alot of people had problems getting their luggage a few days late with all carriers (not everyone had the problem, but quite a few did) - probably due to carnival.

oh well....

Anyone know if Air Jamaica has an embargo on extra baggage right now or not?? I was hoping to fit all my stuff in the two bags, but right now weight isn't an issue, size is. I was hoping to just pay the extra $70 or whatever and bring a third check-in bag with me, but I wanted to make sure they would accept it. The problem is I can't reach anyone at the airline right now to confirm. Please help!
