    Change in CFP

    Hi,

It seems that SGU has raised the admissions standards for those enrolled in the Charter Foundation Program. Now, to be able to matriculate into the med school the student has to achieve a gpa of 3.50 or higher, no longer the 3.20 or higher as it was for previous CFP students.

I have to say, that although I am a bit nervous about this, it also kind of makes me proud to be entering SGU CFP. In talking with an admissions counselor a few weeks ago, I was advised not to consider the CFP as a "pre-admissions" course, or "bostbacc" or "pre-anything," but to consider it as medical school. This really inspires me and lets me think, at least in my own mind, that I'll be a "medical student" in August. Of course, I won't have the privilege of actually matriculating and joining the ranks until January, but it's quite motivating (and sobering) to realize that I will be held to high standards, not just starting in M1, but in CFP. I'm thankful for this opportunity to prove myself, and am glad that SGU really prepares it's students to be exceptional physicians.

    Just my thoughts.

I will be joining you in August! I also received the email today, and have the same thoughts as you. I am nervous and proud to be entering into the program. I am a little worried that they upped the gpa requirement, but confident I will pull it off. Just curious, but have you received your my SGU credentials yet?

If you can make it to MD1 from CFP, you'll be grateful for what you'll have learned in CFP. From my observation, I noticed CFP students in my term did not have problem progressing in the first year of med school program. Most of the students who struggled to make it to the next term were those who got straight admissions to MD1. None of the CFP I knew repeated any terms.

I also got this e-mail notification yesterday. I was pretty panicked and, quite frankly, a bit pissed. Though I did in fact sign a piece of paper agreeing that the University could make changes to the program as they pleased I guess I just didn't expect them to do so. It would've been really nice if the committee went ahead and established this requirement before we all settled our expectations on the 3.2 minimum. Had I known about the 3.5 it may have influenced my final decision to attend the CFP as opposed to Ross. Now the window of opportunity has expired.

With that said, I think I can eventually come to terms with the 3.50 GPA, though its weight is nearly tangible hanging above my head. Riboflavin and jwoody, like you guys I am nervous and proud and anxious to begin. I guess we'll all just have to step up and do our best. It's probably manageable for most of us. We'll all work really hard

Good luck! I did CFP (which most people on campus call by its old name "Foundations") and you can do it. Just keep in mind, you basically will need a B+ average. It's doable, and you can still find time to have fun and party, as long as you put the effort in during the week. CFP students get advisors and you'll be taking a study skills class along with the others. Set yourself a schedule, figure out which study methods work for you (groups, flashcards, note-copying, etc) and you can do well.

CFP turned out to be one of the best things for me, since it really helped me change my study habits and made me more prepared for the onslaught of Term 1.

I did foundations in august 2009 and I can honestly tell you right now that a 3.5 is easily doable. First of all, the mindset you should have going into that program is getting a 4.0
You shoot for a 4.0 and not have to worry about anything else. Thats what I did and thats what I got. Just don't procrastinate and fall behind in anything, follow the lectures and take decent notes. Do practice questions they post online and from other sources and you'll be fine. CFP does help prepare you for Term 1 mostly with the study habits you will pick up during that time. You don't have that great of an edge knowledge wise when it comes to Term 1 so approach it with an open-mind, study hard and you'll be fine. There's always time to party as well...you NEED to party just make sure you're on top of everything before you do it.

I think you asked this is another thread but I will post them again. sgpa 3.1, cgpa 3.3, Mcat 20. My Mcat is one of the lowest I have seen accepted. Must of been all that praying I was doing
