    Roommate situation...

I've been placed in upper term housing in a double 6 suite (im a first term student). I'll be a sharing a room with another fellow roommate. The situation is that, Ive been told by housing I will not get the contact info for these fellow roommates. I wanted to get in touch to get permission for having my brother stay with me for 1 week up until classes start since he will be escorting me.

Ive already contacted Bay Shore Housing, they forwarded me to my admissions counselor who forwarded me to the student help line at Bay Shore, and finally they told me to call Grenada. I did do that and they told me to email a certain person for the forms...

My question....usually are roommates ok to grant such a request? It will only be for a week before classes start. Please advise on what is the best possible solution to this..

Your efforts are much appreciated in advance!

that's not a good idea...everyone is trying to settle in and while those 6 person doubles are not as tiny as the superdorms, it would still be cramp...i mean maybe a night or 2, but a week?

there are nice hotels close to campus and if you let them know you are a student, they usually have a cheap rate.

Most people who have a parent or sibling come with them get a hotel. Probably not the best first impression for he future roommates.

I thought it odd that they won't tell you who your roommates are, but I'm now thinking that they just put you in one of those rooms and don't know exactly where you are going until just before you get there.

It is very inconsiderate of you to expect that your brother could camp out in the housing at the inconvenience of your roommates.

What if everyone brought someone to camp out; how would you feel? Why should you expect special treatment.

Do yourself a favor and don't start issues and get your brother a hotel room. Also why is he staying a whole week?

well i can see that...lots of people bring family and friendsmdown with them...it will be nice tohave someone you know those 1st few days as you get settled in...but in a hotel room or else it has the potential to screw your relationships with your new roommates for the rest of the term.

@ Otis...it was just a thought buddy not being inconsiderate....I'd only be inconsierate if it never happened before and obviously many folks do bring in people during the first few days as evidenced by an online form.....why do you think he is staying the whole week? I'll let you answer that....and just so you know my roommate is in a double six with a sizable living room...if anything he'd be staying there....and we're not talking about bending the rules or getting special treatment....I know and I've heard its a common practice...thats why they have the form and procedure for it now right? If you forgot here is the rules and regulation guide on the accepted students page

    6. Visitors are allowed on campus for a duration of 1 week per term (7 days). Residents are asked to complete a form prior to the arrival of their visitor. This form can be collected from the Housing Office. Those students living with roommates or suitemates must have all residents of the room or suite sign the form to confirm their willingness to accommodate the visitor.

So Im only being considerate to the extent that Im willing to ask them FIRST by getting in contact with them rather than my brother simply coming into crash in...
no need to get all worked up on it pal....

    @Salama and Rokhshana

thanks for the reply...yes I think a hotel room would be it if in fact this doesn't work out to be, plus I was lucky enough to go to a local university so this dorming idea is still a bit new to me....that is why Im being cautious to ask before hand and if they say no...then obviously Im not going to force the idea now...but thanks though...

sorry, but AFAIK, none of the double 6s have a living room, much less a sizable one...the common area is where the W/D is as as well as the kitichen with a dining table...not really a place for someone to sleep...

check out skyauction.com...you can get really cheap rates there...they are reliable and if you end up winning an auction and can't use it, they will even refund it!

I know my roomies (either now or from the start) wouldn't care if I had someone stay over from day 1, provided:

    1. notice
    2. no style-crampin

That being said, I don't know how big those rooms or common areas are. If there really is no room then a hotel isn't a bad idea. Just make sure it's near a shuttle bus stop so you don't have to pay for taxis all the time.

To be honest, I don't know what the layout of these "Double 6" dorms are. If they are one of those shared doubles like Superdorm 3, it's a no brainer. Your brother should get a hotel, because the inconvenience of having two people sharing a dorm room is bad enough without a third person.

If it's one of those dorms like Superdorm 5, where everyone has private rooms and there is a common kitchen/dining room/bathroom, I'd say there's no terrible harm in asking. It wholly depends on how tolerant (or intolerant, really) your roommate is, but if your expectations are reasonable. The common room is, of course, not an appropriate place to let your brother sleep (unless he's like Snoopy resting atop the doghouse). If there are private rooms, one of you can take a sleeping bag to the ground.

But honestly, I think your brother might be happier in a Caribbean hotel. My roommate's family came to the island in the first week, and I would have been fine with him sharing his room. But they stayed in a hotel. Give him a little comfort while he visits you.

    Please advise:

    (i) what are the names of the hotels (not resorts) near SGU?,

(ii) approximately how far are they from the school?, and

(iii) what would you estimate the per night expense for the hotels?

    Thanks.
