Is the SGU gym free?
How is the atmosphere like in there? Aside from Cardio, how would you rate their weight / lifting related machines.
Apart from the SGU gym, what other gyms are around the campus (bus / walking distance)

The school gym is free.
It is sectioned off into separate rooms, a cardio room and weight room.
The atmosphere is hard to describe -- are you asking physical (like temp) or social atmosphere? Either way, this is the tropics and when the sun is shinning into the room it can get hot and humid.
Regarding the social atmosphere, I've mostly had a good experience with other classmates that use the facilities. Of course you will find meatheads and exercisoholics that hog up the machines or breath over your neck -- but in my experience those were far and few between. There is a sign up list for using machines, which I recommend you put your name down in advance (like early in the day) if you wish to use something later -- in other words plan ahead. There are aroudn 3-4 of each machine, i.e. stationary cycles, bench presses, treadmills, etc. and plenty of weights.
Of more importance is that you gotta understand the gym is in Grenada. Often machines break or something happens to the facilities, i.e. flooding which puts the gym out of commission for a while. Things do get fixed, but often not as fast as you'd like. The student body and government have put in requests to upgrade facilities, even make a new gym but it doesn't seem like its gonna happen in the immediate future.
Regarding your last question, there are no other gyms around campus via walking distance... There was/is one at Spice Land Mall (via bus), however everytime I'm at the mall it seems closed. I could be just going there at off hours. Who knows?

510 points Thanks for the quick responses. I don't think I will be going to the Campus gym often given how you you say it is. I will still go if I have to have to, like if I am too tired to take a bus with sweaty people.
I saw in some old threads there are two gyms outside campus, one of them is Excel Plaza Grenada > Body-Image > Home... is it even still in business?
I
That gym is still in business. There aren't usually many sweaty ppl on the bus since either most ppl don't use those gyms, or if they do, they have cars.
As much as the school gym isn't 5 stars, it highly convenient and if you live on campus, you dont waste all that study time having to go back and forth. I would say most ppl use the gym on campus, or they sign up for intramural sports and play on the field.

I can't imagine the gym being any worse than it was a few years ago when I was there. It's perfectly fine and has everything you need for a solid workout. It may be enclosed and air conditioned now, they were working on that when I was there but it was just open to the outside at the time. You've got free weights and machines, enough for core exercises and just about every major muscle group if you get creative. Cardio is available but I just ran a lot through Grand Anse down towards the hospital every night. The gym can get crowded at times, there were a few of us that preferred to jump on the bus and work out at the school at weird times of the night. If you're used to blue collar gyms then you wont' have any problem. I think the only ones who would be horrified would be the Bailey's or high dollar gym people who are used to brand spanken new equipment. You'll get a great workout, but yes you might have a little rust on your hands when it's over, so what.
Now that was a few years ago, so no idea if much has changed since then. I can't imagine it being worse. They were trying to do some renovation at the time.

Gym is enclosed and ACed. They just got some new equipment, and I believe that they hired a technician so that if something breaks it gets repaired more quickly. They also put in new mirrors, if that matters.
