Jan. '04 1st termers returning home... weird for anyone else???

Hey guys...

Has anyone else found that going back home after your first term on the island is really, really strange? I landed at LAX just this past Friday night, and I swear it was more of a culture shock than it was arriving in Grenada! After driving home to Fresno that night, I felt like I was actually "away from home". I kinda feel like a visitor in my own house. It's weird talking to my girlfriend without a headset on. Everone is always in such a DAMN HURRY here! (Yet, I thought I was getting tired of the slow pace of Grenada!) I keep trying to go left while driving, and I still turn my windshield wipers on when I want to turn! And I truly forgot how incredibly BIG and busy everything here is... stores, streets, everything! Am I the only one freaking out about being home??? Or did the island just screw me up more than usual?

its typical. I remember going to grenada the first time. in PR it seems sooo tropical and unusal. Then coming back PR seems SOoooo american. I realized how good looking everyone was at home, groomed and not all sweaty and humid. After a trip back and home again it will all normalize.

Real world or Freak world?

....Which makes me wonder? Is it wrong to live a slow-paced life or are we wrong in North America to be racing around working 100 hour weeks.

I don't know, but I have been thinking a lot about that lately, especially since I will be working those long hours in about a months time.

Feedback?

Its really just a culture clash. I was watching PBS's "Colonial house" last night and when they went home, same thing. But boy did they miss the modern life in the end. The transition becomes much easier and more natural after the first time.

Nada, youre going to have a fun year ahead of you

re: hey y'all

Hey Snitzle,

Yeah, I got the same kinda thing going on this week. About 7 hours after getting back I went shopping. I wasn't used to the crowds, but getting my food in 20 seconds at the food court was weird (after being in Grenada).

I've also found it's a bit weird driving (although I didn't drive in Grenada like Snitzle did).

I also haven't seen the sun since I've been back in Canada.

ah well, still enjoying it (and sleep, oh my god I love sleep!!)

CHeers,

Silenthunder

Hey Cal! Good to see you made it home from the 'trenches'. It's a little weird to be home & I do get what you mean by feeling like you're away from home now rather than being back at home. Kinda wigs you out, don't it? But it's wonderful to be home!

It was great to just drive my car again (I didn't drive while in Grenada). I'm amazed by a total lack of guilt as I just laze away my days & evenings watching movies & hanging out with friends. I can go for a walk without a worry/hurry and feels like such a blessing. Every so often I just stop & look around to store up views of the mountains & open space to last me thru term2.

Can't believe we made it thru first semester & are still sane, it was touch & go there for a while around midterms

the rock

Wait till you guys get done with greneda and vinnies for good and then come back. I cant speak for others in my class but I actually miss going to the islands. I got so used to it over the two years that I miss the beach, the sunsets, and the rock in general. While we are down there we complain like crazy about getting of the island and here I am talking about missing the place. Is that weird or what?

Actually, Tami, I think my level of sanity is still up for debate at this point!
