Smile African American Students applying to/attending SGU?

Hey everyone! I'm new to valuemd. I'm applying to SGU for Fall 2009. I just wanted to know if there were any African American students applying to or attending SGU? Please post. I just want to know your reasons for applying and for the people who are currently attending, how has your experience been thus far?

i hope I don't get flamed for this. Most African Americans in the SOM at SGU are mostly Grenadians, or international students. There are very few US citizen African Americans at SGU, just for the reason that they are a minority in the US (along with Hispanics) and for them, it is a lot easier to get into a US school for them than others. I can't even think of a single hispanic that I've met at SGU, but I have met a few African Americans from the US, but they are few and far between.

I won't flame you Phospholipid. In some cases (but of course, not all) it is not necessarily easier for African Americans to get into US schools. Anyways, I was just wondering about the African American population at SGU. If you happen to know any of them...send them to this thread ! Thank you for your response!!

that wouldn't make them African American. They would be African-Caribbean or just African or Caribbean. I know a few guys from Botswana really cool dudes, and plenty from other carib islands. but haven't met anyone from the US, i.e. a true African American. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't apply and go to SGU.

Thanks for your post RussianJoo. Even though African Americans are few and far between at SGU, that won't stop me from applying there! I refer to myself as African American because I was born in America, however I come from a Caribbean background...my parents, grandparents, etc. are Caribbean. Like I said, just curious about the African-American population, but that is definitely not a factor I look at when applying. I've already sent off my application !!!

Dr. Z M is the only African American of which I'm aware.

I know some of the African students and Caribbean students from other islands have gotten some kinda strange interactions with locals... A girl I know from Nigeria was told "not to talk like that" because they assumed she was a Grenadian that had gone away for school, stuff like that.

Oh, GOD that is so funny. Everyone in Grenada and St. Vincent assumed I was from Guyana because I'm Indian but dress like an American.
