I would be running Windows Vista on the MAC as well with the help of the amazing!!!! Parallels program. So running Windows programs will not be an issue.

dude...i just bought the macbook. Its my first mac...and I'm in love...
its just ridiculously nice...have you gone to the Apple store and played around with it? If you do...you wouldn't be asking this question...

For the money could you get a Dell with better specs? OF COURSE! but will it be as cool? Hell no! It will be your run of the mill plastic casing black laptop.

The whole unibody aluminum construction of the macbook is gorgeous.

The keypad...just check it out ! Backlit keyboard! (only for higher end macbook and all macbook pros)

Wait...you're a girl? And you're worried about weight & saving money?
    LOL...
Question: You got the perfect outfit...but you need Jimmy Choos to complete the look....do you skimp out?

Anyways...I feel like this question is like all the other "which school in the caribb questions..."
So I'll answer it just the same:
"both will get you to where you need to be...it all depends on you..."

I will simply leave you with this. I'm just floored with my macbook.
The deal is...Sonys are on the expensive end as well...you might as well foot the extra and get the macbook...

Now if you were comparing a HP,Dell,Compaq, I could really see your dilemma because they are priced much much lower.

Can you send me a link the the vaio you're thinking of? I see the 'Z' series which indeed is 1lb lighter...I don't see the 'R' series that you're talking about.
Also remember Macs can't pick up a virus. Potentially saving you money on antivirus applications in the future...I wouldn't be stressing over the $200...its well worth it..

Hahahaha......very funny. I am more worried about weight, performance, durability, after-sale-service than money!

I have to disagree on this, as Mac has recently come out with an antivirus, it seems Mac`s popularity has spiked the interest of hackers, also, if you run Windows on the Mac you also need an anti-virus as the Mac may be less proned to viruses but your Windows and it's software isn't O.o Don't get me wrong I am 70% over on the Mac side, my Grad lab was a Mac lab and I LOVED IT. I'll try to find you a link for the VAIO, I have seen it in a store though not online.

I'm not in med school right now...but I do work in one...and I see a lot of students with Macs. As a matter of fact...my research department is exclusively Mac.

I own both a PowerBook and Macbook and I don't think I could ever go back to a PC. I had nothing but trouble with my old PC and my 2 Macs have been incredibly reliable (my 5 year old PowerBook still runs like it did when I first took it out of the box). However....I use VM Fusion instead of Parallels on my Macbook. It's the same price and I was told to buy it over Parallels (a Mac Genius told me to) and it works just fine. Also...I'm running XP instead of Vista. I tried Vista...I hate it.

Hey! thanks for the great advice, my lab used to be strictly Macs as well and I LOVED IT. Does the VM Fusion allow you to run the Windows XP concurrently or do you have to restart in the Windows mode like with the BootCamp? I hate Vista as well, however buying an authentic XP these days is harder than buying a kidney :P....any suggestions on that?
