Is it me or do SGU's 2003 residency matches seem less prestigious than normal?

Is it me or do SGU's residency matches seem less prestigious than normal? I am used to seeing alot more reputable Univeristy programs, and much more in surgery, etc... When i look at the 5 year trend , seems like the 2003 match was not as prestigious as the norm. This isn't taking a punch at SGU, on the contrary, I guess my expections are always super high of SGU since its the best Carib Med School.

SGU resideny List

That is not complete yet; I know that many more people have matched into anesthesiology, sucha s Stanford and Loyola, just as an example. Check back later for SGU's complete list.

Thanks for the link futurestudentmay03, this is the first time I have seen this!

huh

Bayshore clinical staff = mental midgets. I cant think of any other reason why they dont feel the need to put the people who matched anesthesiology at Stanford and Memorial Sloan Kettering on the list yet miami and st. ******* are right up there. I'm glad ross students are making fun of the sgu match list.. because it sure as hell deserves to be made fun of.

SGU's incomplete Match list - quite typical

I particularly liked the listing of an Internal Medicine spot as simply "University Medical Center." University of what?

Also, they failed to include the guy who matched into Neurosurgery - you think SGU would play THAT up.

Bayshore ain't run like a swiss watch, that's for sure. I can't count the number of headaches they have caused me with screwed up paperwork, etc. But hey, in two weeks, I'm outta here!

match

I think the problem is that most fourth years are basically done with rotations by the time they match, and SGU has no strict system for requiring them to report where they match.

Evolution

More likely, it is not because SGU, or any of the caribbean medical school are doing something wrong. Or that their students are not doing as well. It is more likely that there is more competition. Might be time to realize that it is a big world out there. There are many medical schools worthy of mention. As such, I am sure their graduates with their USMLE scores are now showing their potential. Thus gaining residency positions. What was is not necessary what will be forever more.

Prestige - SGU match list

Keep in mind that the SGU match list is 1) not yet complete- many students do not inform the school where they matched until they fill out the graduation paperwork. 2) shows only the first year position, ie, the guy who matched in nuerosurgery at Univ of Missouri is listed as general surgery as he is doing the required 2 years of prelim surgery first, and most anesthesia programs also require a prelim med or surg year first, so that would be what is listed. Some students do indeed give us the specialty match, ie, where they will be ina year or 2, but most give us what they'll be doing next year. As an emergency doc, I think this year was a great year for the SGU students- Duke, USC, as well as the many programs in NY and Michigan that take our grads each year. Overall the list I think shows a stable if not increasing trend to prestigious programs!

Agree with Dr. Madden - Good Match this year

I think it was a good match this year for SGU, know that a guy got ortho, rads, neursurg, a couple ENT's, and perhaps Urology(not sure). It is just frustrating because I am dying to find out where everybody will be heading (my only source is the grapevine). I think the match list should list the catagorical positions instead of prelim- the prelim spots positions are not really as important and makes the match list look less prestigious than it really is. I understand that not everyone reports their match results - but I think it is encumbant on Bay Shore to enforce disclosure of Match results.

Question for Dr. Madden - Does the NRMP send Bay Shore any kind of Match results list or statistics? Apparantly US dean's offices are provided with such info. Just curious.

Thanks
