Need Advice :: Surviving Anatomy and Note Taking Tips

All my courses are fine except for Anatomy ...

I struggle with running out of time and Anatomy and don't understand how anyone accomplishes what they are asking/teaching and retains all this information that i need to know..

I need some times, I’m stressed, feeling VERY overwhelmed, the DES office was not helpful at all ... I know all about study tips, but what about note taking? I just spend SOOO much time taking notes... and feeling like its all hopeless and overwhelming...

take this with a grain of salt as this is only me,
i find that in term 1, there really isnt much note to take as you basically just have to memorize what they give you (the notes)

I actually agree with Jay.. no note-taking needed.. I'm just reading the lecture notes inside out during the week, and reading Gray's during the weekend.. I barely touch the atlases, and I'm feeling fine (although the amount of material is overwhelming, yes).

Then again, I study every night (except Fridays), and study all weekend, so maybe it's just me..

best way to test yourself if you grasp anatomy is to do clinical questions such as the ones in BRS or from the UMich website

How are you studying? I personally start by learning the big structures (muscles, bones), then moving to nerves, and then to smaller details. I rely primarily on netter flashcards for this part. I don't write anything down except if I'm making my own flashcards.

As for the clinical material, I find that between the lecture notes, BRS, clinical atlas, and online questions things repeat ALOT. Since the written exams are supposed to be all clinical, I feel I have a good idea of what to focus on, and I use that to reinforce what anatomical details I need to look over again. Then of course you have dry/wet lab, virtual lab, and small group discussions so everything ends up being repeated many times.

I was kinda overwhelmed whenever we started a new region, but after a few days of reviewing it wasn't too bad. Now I'm trying to start learning the material before the lectures.

I checked out the UMich site - great help (even though it goes into areas we haven't touched, like skin). However, the practical part flummoxed me. How are we supposed to understand those pictures? It's hard enough trying to figure out what part of the body it is, let alone identify the muscle/nerve in question.

Well, my advise would be to find a small study group and see how they study. Do not study by yourself and do not take any notes! The only notes I was taking were from Wikipedia - muscle attachments, since they don't really put them into the handout...know hand out by heart and you'll be fine.
