Luggage size

This is the "maximum linear inches". What this means is length+width+height. Essentially, when you add all three dimension (not multiply, add), it should be no more than the specified limit. The standard for checked luggage is 62" (158cm).

Is it possible to carry two pieces of baggage, 70lbs in total, and another extra piece of baggage? Also, what is the weight and dimension limit for the extra piece of baggage?

Depends on what airline yo're flying. Most American airlines (like AA) allow 2 bags, 50 lbs each, for free on international flights. For each bag that's between 50 and 70 lbs, you get charged $50. So basically, you can take two 70 lb bags (or a total of 140 lbs) for $100. Also, for each bag between 70 and 100 lbs, you get charged $100. So you can take two 100 lb bags (or 200 lbs) for $200. Alternatively, you can take extra bags for $100 each. These are all rates for domestic flights. Check with the airline about international flights.

LIAT allows a total of 50 lbs (over 1 bag or 2). Any excess baggage will be charged $40 (up to 70 lbs total) and $60 (for total weight more than 70 lbs). Dimension limit (l+w+h) is 62 inches. Extra bags are also charged $60 a piece. But the problem is that even after the extra charge, the excess baggage would be put on standby, depending on space availability. So you may get that baggage with you on the same flight, or the next flight, or the flight next day, or 2 days later, or 3 days later - you get the picture. The chances of losing your bag (temporarily or permanently) also increase if you take extra bags.

I'm taking LIAT too, but I plan to bring two 50lb bags with me on AA to Trinidad, then in Trindad I'll cargo one bag to Grenada, and take one with me on LIAT, saving money and risk. You can also cargo your extra bags directly from the US, using Amerijet.

I think LIAT is pretty awesome. Cheap fares and the time in the air is very short. Nice service on board too.

Thanks. So if I bring 2 pieces of baggage with a total of 50lbs, a 3rd baggage must be less than 20lbs for $40 (total 3 baggage 70lbs)? and if over 20lbs it will be $60? Also, you said "Extra bags are also charged $60 a piece", so that's for the carry-on bags u mean?

Well they also have a limit of 2 bags. A 3rd bag will automatically cost $60, regardless of the weight. So it's better to fill 50 lbs in 1 bag instead of 2. That also reduces your chances of losing any bags. Carry-ons with a maximum weight of 15 lbs are allowed (although I'm not sure if and how they weigh it).

American Airlines Baggage.

From US to Greneda has slightly different specifications,

You are allowed one carry on not to exceed 40lbs.
You are allowed two checkd bags.
Each can be only a max of 50lbs. BUT Both combined can be only 70lbs.

If you are flying american the whole way , they will not allow for a third checked bag- even if you are willing to pay a fee. This is because, they said, the small plane that you take to the island wont fit/handle the extra weight.

So, even if you wanted to pay for extra weight the airline said absolutely not.

:-(

I just htought it was good info to share- espeically since I called 3 times and this final call was the most efficient woman i spoke to! LOL

Good luck every one, see you on the island
