Hi,
Are the exams cumulative, ie. does the 2nd exam for path include material from the 1st exam as well?

They are not really cumulative, but you still need to understand and remember the concepts learned in General Pathology. It is important to maintain familiarity with topics such as inflammation, neoplasms, etc....

I do not know what the occasion was, but the group took a long time posing for pictures.

After that, I wondered if those students were also given preferential treatment in class.

BTW, I was not invited.
Nah. I'm Indian too and he certainly didn't do anything special for me. And I also had over 100% in path - didn't get any awards..

I am appalled that kananaskis_girl, who said she had tutored her fellow students for 20+ hours a week didn't receive that award or any recognition from the path department. Helping out your fellow students that much is pretty admirable.

Can I take a moment and complain about some of the tutors who led small group sessions in anatomy? Some of them were possibly the most malignant personalities I've ever seen. Not just unhelpful, but insulting and petty. One told me I'd be a bad doctor when I couldn't answer a question fast enough my second week of school, and that taking a moment to think was inexcusable. I didn't take it to heart, but I was still horrified. Another used to check his watch repeatedly, roll his eyes, and send text messages just to drive the point home that we were all totally uninspiring and not worth his time. He also bragged that his future was set in stone, while ours certainly was not. Thanks for sharing, asshat. On the other hand, the jerks made us appreciate the fantastic tutors even more - we all thanked them repeatedly for their help and enthusiasm. But it just pisses me off that the school hires some of these useless jerks. The departments - anatomy and pathology - should hold all of their staff to higher standards. If a tutor is rude and useless, they should be told to find employment elsewhere. I know in my case - as an apprehensive new student - being treated like garbage by these people made long days seem much, much longer.

Exclamation word of advice for path

don't use the tutors

study on your own; heck, i even knew people who basically didn't goto lab (and they were so #1 happier with life durring path and #2 did just as well as those of us who went)

if you know the text from lecture well, you'll pass --and passing is ALL THAT MATTERS in the end

and remember: GRADES ARE WORTHLESS -- people in the states don't care

what they look at is THE BOARDS

SO SPEND YOUR TIME WISELY AND LEARN STUFF THAT MATTERS (FOR THE STEP 1!!!)

people kept tellin me this over and over while i was in 4th/5th/6th term...and its TRUE and i wish i'd LISTENED because it woulda made Step 1 prep (which COUNTS) so much easier!!!!

lol, thanks for the vote of confidence...to tell you the truth, about half-way through path I realized what that award stood for and probably wouldn't have accepted it anyways just b/c I knew where it was coming from. The greatest reward for me was seeing the few classmates I helped out get through path with their hard work and perseverance. Remember, some of the things that are most worthwhile doing are often the things that go unnoticed or unrewarded, I wouldn't change anything I did that semester!

and yes, pretty much ALL of the tutors at the school are basically the same, throughout the 2 years...it's just that in path we are basically forced to be at lab every day and there is more interaction and time for bad feelings to arise...keep strong!!

Hold up, do you mean the clinical skills lab (can't remember how it was called) within the anatomy course, that were held in the PD lab? Yes those were a waste of time. I went to one session and was disgusted; I never went to any more.

Let me make sure I understand you Mattttw; are you saying that Path lab is a waste of time? Because if it is that's a lot of time I could save by skipping. However, it has to be mandatory, no?
I think I must be misunderstanding what you said....

Hmmm, so it is mandatory, huh? I find it hard to imagine it was of little importance.
Out of interest, why were you so good at Path; any background prior to SGU?

I'm not sure what it was called - they were small group discussions in the anatomy course, we were divided into groups of 8 or so and discussed questions that were posted on Angel, the answers to which we were supposed to prepare ahead of time. Sometimes we had amazing tutors, but many of them - especially in the beginning - made me want to shoot myself in the face. I just could not believe how rude they were.

I'm not sure to which extent any labs are mandatory, but I would certainly not just stop going to any of them. We were warned by Dr. L that students were being reported to the dean for "unprofessional behavior" for not showing up to Anatomy labs, and they always took attendance at small group discussions. Not sure how other departments handle this, but I wouldn't make a habit of blowing things off.
