USMLE Step 1 dates, post basic sciences? Anyone know?

For those finishing term 5 next May 2009, how long do they have to prepare for Step 1?

clinicals start around mid august, you need to give yourself more or less 6 wks to get your score back before you can begin clinicals, so count 6 wks back from mid august and that should be the latest you take usmle 1

So that would mean taking USMLE at the beginning of July. If terms 5/6 end mid-May, that means we only have a month and a half to prepare?

6-8 weeks is pretty normal for the traditional schedule from what I understand.

sounds about right.
of course you could take longer if needed, then you would need to request a LOA.

note...this is the schedule that US students take. so it is not impossible to REVIEW for usmle in about 6 wks. note i said REVIEW and not study. if you find yourself need to study for usmle, i suggest you take a LOA and take the time you need to do well on this exam, as you know, once you pass, you cant retake it, and if you fail, well that is also bad and also some states have limit on how many times you can take usmle in order to get licensed in that state. check the fsmb site for more details

this may seem a stupid question but how is usmle 1 tested, is it like MCAT where there is a pre set date or is it more like you can schedule for when you want?

but if you are done with term 5/6 in may, wouldn't you have to basically take a whole year of leave of absence since clinicals wouldn't start until the NEXT fall?
