Books to Bring?

Hi,

I would like to know if it is necessary to bring any textbooks as a supplement since I can only bring luggage of maximum weight 70 lbs.
If so what textbooks do you recommend? And are they availabe to be purchased from SGU bookstore?

Thank you

I am planning on bringing the First Aid book, Rapid Review Anatomy, HY Embryology, maybe Netter flash cards. These books because I am following advice that preparation for step 1 starts on the first day.

First Aid is completely useless in the first term.
Netter flash cards are VERY helpful.
I used BRS anatomy, dont know about rapid review.
I don't think you'll need HY embryology either because most of the questions on the exams are straight out of the textbook.
You won't need any review books for histology nor biochemistry.

you don't bring 1st aid down just for the classes....you have to have more forethought...its not just about the classes anyone, everything you do down on the island is geared to one thing....learning the material throughly enough to do well on step I.

having 1st aid with you from day one is so you can annotate it with Step I relelvant material so when it comes time to REVIEW for step I, you have a nice compact source for studying.

You definitely don't need First Aid Review. Even if it is a helpful book, you just don't have time to look into it your first semester. Even Biochem BRS is pretty useless, since everything is in the lecture notes and they also give you 2 Biochem books.
However anatomy BRS and Flash cards are a must. Rohen's atlas of anatomy...hm...I brought it...opened may be twice just of curiosity... But I had plenty of luggage allowance, since my boyfriend traveled with me and we flew Air Jamaica.
You can buy/order books from the Book store, but they will be more expensive and shipping is pretty expensive too.
Embryo is straight from the lectures and they also give you the book.

i had plenty of time to go thro FA in first term. if you think it is worth it and important, you will make time for it.
and you dont really need too much time for FA in term 1, just breifly go over it, and sometime you will be surpise at what little tricks they have for memorizing stuff in anatomy, biochem and histo!

i think ppl get the wrong idea that you need sit there and study from FA in term 1, not at all...sit there and just browse thro the stuff that you covered in class already, and if there are any important points that pops up for a topic mentioned by someone or a prof note it down. and like i said, they had some cool way of remembering certain stuff, at least for me it did the trick

again, you are looking at the trees and forgetting the forest...

you are just thinking about the term at hand and while 1st term can be overwhelming, you have to think about what is really the important thing...its not betting an "A" in biochem or anatomy....its learning the material presented to you and retaining that info 2 years later for step I (the by product is that if you study that way, you will get the "A" in your classes...).

i said "review" for a reason -- if you think you are going to "study" for step I after you finish your 2 years in gnd and get 90+ on it, you are sadly mistaken...you ARE studying for step I from the day you start classes and the 6-8 weeks you take to prepare for step I will not be enough time to learn the concepts of two years of med school.

Again, the people i know that score 90 and over prepped their study material from the get go, whether it be making their own notes off of the lecture and textbook material or annotated 1st aid or the kaplan books- I personally annotated 1st aid (i wasn't efficient enough to make my own notes and didn't know about the kaplan notes) and its much easier to find the 5-10 minutes while you are studying to add the relevant step I info than try to go back later and re-read and and info.
