Best hospital for clinicals

Hi,

I was wondering, after looking at all the clinicals hospitals listed on SGUs website, which one would be the best. I'm sure a lot of former SGU students could chip in here...

My plans for residency are 1) Ortho 2) Radiology 3) Interal Medicine

Let me know what would be the best sites..

The list of hospitals on the website doesn't apply to all students and the list could change too. When you're in 5/6 term you'll get a list of hospitals available to your class and you should work from there.

In the words of Dean W. all the hospitals are equal and provide the same clinical training.
SGU tries their hardest for this to be the case so there is no best hospital.

that is quite the wide range of interests there!

for ortho- there isn't any place that will be better or worse- you will need to have a crazy high gpa (3.9+) and outstanding step scores(240+) and grea LoR- and do good away rotations- and start early sowing the seeds...

for radiology- it would help to do cores at a place that has a radiology residency (in NJ thats morristown, barnabas, and newark beth) so you can get good letters, high gpa (3.5+) and great step (esp I) scores (230+). Also audition rotations can help

for both applying widely is the key and just getting as many interviews as you can (and going on them).

for IM- I've heard Highlands is a phemonemal core and sub I experience- they give you way more responsiblity than most of the NY/NJ sites.

I disagree. Hospitals provide quite different experiences. However, how much you work and how much interest you show will enhace your experience. if you work hard and are enthusiastic residents and attendings will go out of their way to teach you. however, don't expect anyone to hold your hand or spoon-feed you...

well, I think RJ is right in one aspect, in that there is no perfect clinical center...one will have a better IM,another a better surg and in the end each clinical center probably give you the same sort of overall experience- that there is no one clinical center that is better than another.

however, i agree with you that each hospital will have its own feel and one may suit you better than another...ie you know that say surgery is for you, better that you end up at a clinical center that has a great rep for their surg rotation and may be so so for peds or family.

Not true. I'm doing electives at Brooklyn Hospital right now and it'd be best to avoid this place at all costs. Coming from Methodist, you cant compare to the teaching, didactics, attendings, etc. Dean W is lying and I'm sure deep down he knows it. How is it possible to say the otherwise? Fight for the good hospitals - it does make a difference.

see you just proved the point- i have friends did cores at brooklyn and thought many of them were good and people who think methodist (at least IM) is malignant as hell....what one person thinks is great, another will say is crap....

i also heard though brooklyn is crawling with students- personally i like a hospital where there aren't as many- who needs 25 people on surgery?
